    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist explains her emotional state through the lens of 'synaptic pruning'.
    • A legal will that mandates the completion of 12 Christmas traditions before property can be transferred.
    • The heavy focus on the 'lard' content of a traditional family cake.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Dr. Sharon Harper, a brilliant neuroscientist in New York, receiving a nomination for the prestigious McAdams Fellowship. Despite her professional success, she is grieving the recent death of her grandmother, Vera, who raised her. Sharon returns to her hometown, Pine Springs, to handle the estate. She meets Sam Taylor, the estate attorney and Vera's neighbor, who reveals a unique condition in Vera's will: before Sharon can sell or keep the house, she must complete twelve specific Harper family Christmas traditions, each corresponding to a '12 Days of Christmas' ornament set. Sharon, a logical scientist, is initially skeptical but agrees to the 'experiment.' As Sharon begins the list, she discovers that the 'Two Turtle Doves' ornament—the one legend says makes people fall in love—is missing. While searching for it, she grows close to Sam and his daughter, Michaela. It is revealed that Vera was Michaela's therapist after Sam's wife, Jenny, passed away, creating a deep bond between the families. Sharon struggles to balance her growing feelings for Sam with the pressure of her upcoming fellowship interview. She uses her scientific background to process her grief, discussing 'synaptic pruning' and the way the brain wires itself for joy or sadness. Throughout the film, Sharon and Sam participate in various traditions: baking a lard-based lemon cake, assembling a massive 15-foot lawn Santa, and attending the town tree lighting. The central conflict peaks when Sharon must fly back to New York for her fellowship interview on the 30th. Sam, fearing Sharon will leave permanently, hesitates to fully commit, telling her he can't kiss her if she has 'one foot out the door.' During her interview, Sharon gives a moving speech about the gap between scientific knowledge and the lived experience of loss, realizing she wants to use her expertise to help people heal emotionally. In the climax, Sam discovers the missing 'Two Turtle Doves' ornament in a box of his late wife's belongings; Vera had given it to Jenny to use as a model for a new set before Jenny died. Sharon returns to Pine Springs, having won the fellowship. She decides to keep the house for a year, write a book, and open a grief center in town. The film concludes with Sharon and Sam finally kissing, having found the missing ornament and a new future together.
