Two Scoops of Italy

The film begins with Danielle, a talented chef in Santa Monica, facing the potential closure of her restaurant, 'Danielle's.' Her friend and investor, Owen, informs her that the current menu lacks 'magic' and gives her one month to find a concept that sticks before he reinvests his money elsewhere. At the urging of her sister Sarah, Danielle takes a 'working vacation' to Ostia Antica, Italy. Upon arrival, she meets Aldo, a humorous cafe owner, and his son Giancarlo. Danielle is initially a critic of Giancarlo's experimental gelato flavors, specifically a grapefruit-rosemary blend, suggesting he use egg yolks for better balance. Recognizing her talent, Giancarlo proposes a deal: he will show her the local sights for culinary inspiration if she helps him develop a signature summer flavor to impress a discerning local child named Nico and honor his late mother's legacy. As they explore the village, including the local castle and a lush herb garden, Danielle begins to relax and find her 'mojo.' They visit an olive oil farm where they find the final inspiration for their gelato: a combination of honey, ricotta, hazelnuts, and mint, which they name 'Masolino's Song' after a character in a local book. Meanwhile, a secondary romance blossoms between Danielle's landlady, Elida, and the local handyman, Bruno, whom Danielle helps set up. The central conflict intensifies when Owen calls Danielle to move the investment deadline up, leaving her with only 24 hours to finalize her restaurant's fate. Feeling defeated and pressured, Danielle nearly gives up, but Giancarlo shows her his 'virtual travel' room, revealing he stayed in the village only to support his father after his mother's death. In the climax, Aldo reveals to Giancarlo that he was not named 'Aldo' like the three generations before him because his mother wanted him to have his own destiny, effectively releasing him from the burden of the cafe. Danielle realizes that her restaurant shouldn't just be about high-end food, but about the community spirit she found in Italy. She pitches a new, approachable cafe concept to Owen, which he accepts. In the final scene, as Danielle prepares to leave for the airport, Giancarlo surprises her by deciding to follow her to America. He brings his passport and his gelato-making skills, and the film ends with the couple together in California, successfully running the rebranded 'Danielle's' with Giancarlo's gelato as a staple.
