    The premise

25-year-old Jennifer Mills (Anna Chlumsky) lives her life without commitment, relieved that her boyfriend isn't even close to putting a ring on her finger. Nothing like her older sister Mandy (Chelah Horsdal), who married young and settled into family life, Jennifer loves being carefree. But her mother Kathryn (Susan Hogan) sees Jennifer's wild ways as a fear of settling down, and hatches a secret plan to take her from playful to parent in just three weeks. When Mandy and her husband plan a three-week European vacation without their three kids, Kathryn convinces Jennifer to help watch them until she can get into town. Jennifer quickly finds out that playing house isn't for kids, and realizes that she must go from cool aunt to strict parent to keep her sister's trust. But with a little help from Will (Warren Christie), the handsome new neighbor across the street, she manages to pull it together to prove to everyone, even herself, that taking responsibility can be rewarding.

    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The mother fakes her husband's injury and potential disability to manipulate her adult daughters into a 'growth experience'.
    • The protagonist's sister wears black nail polish and a leather jacket in Paris to signify she is 'finding herself'.
    • The 'social engineering' reveal is treated as a heartwarming moment rather than a betrayal of trust.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Jennifer, a talented but commitment-averse graphic designer, receiving a partnership offer from her boss, Charlie. Fearing the weight of responsibility, she hesitates to accept. Meanwhile, her sister Mandy and brother-in-law Brian are preparing for a long-delayed three-week honeymoon to Europe. The plan for their parents to watch the kids falls through when their mother, Kathryn, calls to report that their father has suffered a debilitating hip injury. Jennifer reluctantly agrees to fill in, despite Mandy's vocal doubts about her sister's maturity. Jennifer is immediately overwhelmed by the complex 'Bible' of instructions Mandy left behind, covering everything from soccer practices to specific lunch preferences. She meets Will, a former restaurant owner who is cleaning out his aunt and uncle's house next door, when he offers her a dumpster and later helps her fix a broken pipe. As Jennifer settles into the routine, she faces several crises: the eldest daughter Alice is sneaking out with a 'bad boy' on a motorcycle; the middle daughter Flo is being bullied by 'mean girls' at school; and the youngest, Miles, is having his lunch stolen by a bully named Toby. Jennifer initially struggles, failing at cooking and nearly quitting after Alice is caught in a police sweep at a party. However, Will encourages her to stay the course, teaching her that parenting is about 'dealing' rather than being perfect. Jennifer begins to succeed, helping Miles stand up to his bully with a clever lunch prank and coaching Flo through her social anxieties. She also breaks up with her self-centered boyfriend Quinn, realizing he doesn't fit into her new, more grounded life. When the parents return, Kathryn reveals a shocking twist: she 'socially engineered' the entire situation, faking her husband's injury to force Jennifer to grow up and to give Mandy the child-free honeymoon she desperately needed. Jennifer, now transformed, accepts the partnership at her firm and begins a real relationship with Will, finally embracing the commitment she once feared.
