    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The 'Wool Pooh' - a surreal, shadowy monster that Kenny hallucinates during his near-death experience and the church bombing.
    • The 'Lipless Wonder' - a comic book concept Kenny creates about his brother's lips being ripped off by a frozen window.
    • The 'Genie behind the couch' - a family myth that magical beings live behind the sofa to help with homework or heal trauma.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in Flint, Michigan, introducing the 'Weird Watsons': humorous father Daniel, homesick mother Wilona, rebellious eldest son Byron, studious narrator Kenny, and angelic younger sister Joetta. Byron’s constant delinquency, including getting his lips frozen to the car mirror and getting a forbidden 'conk' hairstyle, leads his parents to decide on a drastic measure: driving him to Birmingham, Alabama, to live with the formidable Grandma Sands. Daniel prepares the family car, the 'Brown Bomber,' with a new record player for the long journey. As they travel south, the tone shifts from lighthearted family bickering to tension as they encounter segregated facilities and the dangers of traveling while Black in the Jim Crow era. Upon arriving in Birmingham, they find Grandma Sands is not the monster they imagined but a resilient woman living with a companion named Mr. Robert. The children meet cousins who are active in the local Civil Rights protests, exposing them to the 'D-Day' youth marches and the reality of police brutality. Kenny faces a personal brush with death when he ignores warnings and nearly drowns in a local swimming hole, an event he hallucinates as an encounter with a monster Byron calls the 'Wool Pooh.' The climax occurs on September 15, 1963, when a bomb explodes at the 16th Street Baptist Church where Joetta is attending Sunday School. Kenny wanders into the smoke-filled ruins, seeing a shoe he believes belongs to his sister and fleeing in terror. Though Joetta is miraculously unharmed, having followed a vision of Kenny away from the church just before the blast, the family is deeply traumatized. They return to Flint immediately, where Kenny sinks into a depression, hiding behind the sofa in hopes of 'magic' healing. In the resolution, Byron shows a new maturity by comforting Kenny, helping him process his survivor's guilt and the senselessness of racial violence. The film ends with a message of hope, noting that while the world is unfair, the 'magic' of family love provides the strength to keep moving forward.
