Desiree Harper lives a charmed life in a Manhattan penthouse until her husband, Wade, a surgeon who specializes in 'toe-besity' (cosmetic foot surgery), announces he is leaving her for his 20-year-old acupuncturist, Olive, on their anniversary. Because Desiree signed a 'malignant' pre-nuptial agreement, she is immediately evicted, her credit cards are destroyed, and her socialite friends abandon her. After a minor car accident, she retreats to her childhood home in Flemington, New Jersey, to live with her father, Paddy, who runs a struggling traditional bakery. Initially a 'fish out of water' who ruins her designer clothes with flour, Desiree eventually uses her MBA to revitalize Paddy's business. She introduces 'paddycakes'—miniature, gourmet versions of her mother's cake recipes—and modernizes the shop with designer coffee and a new playlist. During a delivery mishap where she accidentally destroys a birdhouse, she meets Benny, the charming chef and owner of a local French-style chateau. Their romance blossoms over shared meals and a group bowling outing, though Desiree remains fixated on returning to her old life in New York. The bakery's success attracts the attention of Zwieback International, a massive corporation interested in franchising the 'Paddy's Bakery' brand. Desiree returns to Manhattan for the negotiations, but she quickly realizes the corporate executives intend to push her father into 'minimal involvement' and eventual retirement. Realizing that her father is the heart of the bakery, she rejects the multi-million dollar deal and chooses her family over her former status. In the climax, Wade reappears in Flemington, begging Desiree to return to him after his mistress dumps him following a false pregnancy alarm. He attempts to lure her back with a Ferrari and the promise of her old life. However, when Wade insults Benny and the town, Benny punches him. Desiree officially rejects Wade, realizing she no longer fits into his superficial world. The film concludes with a celebration at the bakery, where Desiree, Benny, Paddy, and their friends celebrate their community and the 'sweeter side of life.'
