    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The central conflict revolves around a 'needle arts empire' and embroidery YouTube influencers.
    • The murder weapon is a pair of specialized serrated embroidery scissors.
    • Aurora defeats the killer by swinging a bag of library books like a flail.
    • The meta-commentary about a librarian and a spy being a 'bad novel' plot.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Aurora Teagarden moving into a new home while pining for her boyfriend Martin, a CIA agent who has returned to field duty. Her childhood friend, Poppy Wilson, has recently moved back to Lawrenceton and is finding success as a YouTube embroidery influencer alongside her business partner, Cara. During a local 'Hometown Heroes' awards banquet, Poppy fails to show up to support her boyfriend, journalist Dustin Sykes. Aurora and her friend Sally go to check on Poppy and discover her dead in her condo; she has been stabbed with a serrated blade. The investigation initially focuses on several people: Dustin, who had a secret argument with Poppy; Lizzy Allison, who was jealous of Poppy's close professional relationship with her fiancé Bubba; and Nicole, Poppy's stepmother, who reportedly wanted Poppy cut out of her father Marv's will. Aurora finds a gas receipt near the crime scene and hidden threatening letters from Nicole to Poppy, while the police discover that Bubba's alibi for the time of the murder is shaky. Bubba eventually admits to hiding evidence to protect Lizzy, whom he feared was the killer. However, Aurora's breakthrough comes while watching a tribute video Cara made for Poppy. She notices that Cara is left-handed—matching the medical examiner's profile of the killer—and that Cara's specialized embroidery scissors have a four-inch serrated blade. Aurora realizes Cara killed Poppy to seize control of their 'needle arts empire' and the profits Poppy was 'sucking in.' Aurora rushes to Cara’s house just as Cara is about to kill Jason Dell, who had also uncovered the truth. Aurora subdues Cara by hitting her with a heavy bag of library books. The movie ends with Bubba and Lizzy reconciling and Aurora reflecting on her life in Lawrenceton, feeling lucky despite the dangers she faces.
