The film begins with Anna Jordan, a dedicated cardiac nurse in Boston, finishing her final shift before heading home to Kentsbury for Christmas. At a donut shop, she encounters James and Gabriella, who are struggling with travel delays; she offers them her 'buy one, get one free' cruller, which James stiffly declines. When their flight is grounded and traffic to Boston is blocked, Anna offers the 'strangers' a ride to her father's inn. Upon arrival, the royals reveal their identities but request discretion to avoid a media circus. James is under immense pressure to write a Christmas Eve address that will save the monarchy's reputation from a cynical Prime Minister, but he is stuck in a cycle of formal, cold drafts. As they spend time together, Anna challenges James's rigid nature, taking him on a carriage ride and engaging in a snowball fight. Meanwhile, a subplot involves the town's 'Pajama Ball,' a 75-year tradition started by Anna's late mother. When the original venue's roof collapses, James suggests moving the event to the inn and upgrading it to a formal ball, helping Anna honor her mother's memory in a new way. A romance also blossoms between the royal security lead, Christopher, and the town's mayor, Sarah. The conflict peaks when a video of James in Kentsbury goes viral, leading the Galwickian public to believe he is neglecting his duties. Feeling the weight of his crown, James leaves abruptly for Galwick, leaving Anna heartbroken. However, back at the palace, James discovers his late father's diary, which reveals that the 'Nurse A.J.' who cared for him during his final days in Boston was actually Anna. Realizing she is the woman who gave his father hope, James delivers a heartfelt, authentic speech to his nation and immediately returns to Kentsbury. He surprises Anna at the ball, wearing his father's medals and fuzzy Christmas socks, and they confess their love during a waltz.
