    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins in Lakeville, Michigan, where Emily James lives a quiet life teaching children's skating lessons and waitressing at a local café owned by her mother's best friend, Hildy. Eight years prior, Emily was a top-tier competitive skater who abruptly vanished from the scene during the Olympic trials to care for her terminally ill mother. Spencer Patterson, a talented coach, arrives in town to train the promising young Nikki Lee. Upon meeting Emily at the café and later seeing her on the ice, Spencer recognizes her as the legendary Emily James and is stunned that she is no longer competing. He eventually convinces Emily to help him co-coach Nikki, primarily to act as a buffer against Nikki's overbearing 'stage mom,' Mia. As they work together, Spencer realizes Emily still possesses world-class talent and begins pushing her to enter the Midwest Regionals. Emily is hesitant, feeling she is past her prime and still processing the grief of her mother's death, but Spencer's belief in her sparks a romantic and professional revival. However, the partnership is threatened when Mia discovers Emily is training to compete against her daughter. Mia fires Spencer and hires Leslie Adams—Emily’s former coach who is known for her 'win-at-all-costs' attitude. Leslie attempts to sabotage Emily’s comeback by planting a story with a reporter, suggesting Spencer is only using Emily to advance his own coaching career. This leads to a brief period of doubt where Emily quits the team, but she eventually reconciles with Spencer after realizing his intentions are pure. In a parallel subplot, Dave, the rink owner, attempts to rekindle a romance with Hildy, eventually re-proposing to her twenty years after his first attempt. As the competition nears, Nikki becomes miserable under Leslie's harsh training and reunites with Emily and Spencer in secret. On the day of the Midwest Regionals, Emily nearly withdraws to avoid overshadowing Nikki, but Nikki encourages her, calling Emily her hero. In the final free-skate, Nikki delivers a stunning performance to win the gold medal, while Emily takes the silver. The movie ends with Emily finding closure with her past, Nikki rediscovering the joy of skating, and Emily and Spencer officially beginning their life together as a couple.
