Abby Morgan is a scientist at North Star Wildlife who prefers spreadsheets to the field and has recently broken up with a boyfriend because he didn't fit her 'comparison chart.' Plagued by recurring dreams of soaring eagles, she is encouraged by her boss, Davis, to track down Alice Hughes, a woman who famously documented the decline of bald eagles in the 1970s. Alice agrees to share her secret research on the condition that Abby visits her in person and then travels to 'Eagle's Crest' in Alaska with a professional guide to conduct a follow-up census. Upon arriving at Lakeside Lodge, Abby meets Eric, a stoic guide who initially mocks her as a mere 'birdwatcher.' She soon discovers Eric is Alice’s grandson and a Juilliard-trained pianist who abandoned his music career after a traumatic recital involving his estranged father. As they journey toward the remote Hidden Canyon, they are joined by lodge owners Ellen and Niko, and eventually Niko’s father Jaco, a Dene Elder who once guided Alice. Jaco introduces Abby to the concept of a 'vision quest' and gifts her a sacred amulet, suggesting her dreams are a spiritual calling. The journey becomes a series of challenges for Abby, including canoeing, fly-fishing, and a grueling mountain hike. Eric and Abby bond over their shared history of parental expectations and the fear of losing control. A pivotal moment occurs when they find 'Lake George' and use a makeshift raft to reach Hidden Canyon, a pristine eagle sanctuary Alice has kept secret for decades. While at the canyon, Abby takes a photo of a grizzly bear and sends it to her friend Meaghan for fun. Meaghan inadvertently shares it with their colleague Harry, who runs a popular 'Bear Tracker' blog. Harry publishes the photo with the GPS coordinates attached, violating Abby’s promise to Alice to keep the location secret. Eric is devastated by the breach of trust, believing Abby used the trip for career advancement. Abby returns to the lodge in disgrace, but she spends her final night writing a deeply personal report that weaves scientific data with the spiritual and emotional lessons she learned. Alice unexpectedly arrives at the lodge with her old friend 'Ranger George' and gives the report her full approval, moved by Abby's sincerity. Eric realizes Abby's mistake was an accident and confesses his love, using her father's 'all or nothing' mantra to seal their commitment under the aurora borealis.
