Stephanie is a corporate recruiter in Los Angeles who views romance with extreme skepticism, famously telling her friend Lisa that while an optimist sees the light at the end of a tunnel, a 'realist sees the train coming.' Lisa, a producer for the reality dating show 'The One,' secretly submits Stephanie as a contestant. After being passed over for a VP promotion and receiving a wedding invitation from her ex-fiancé, Stephanie decides she needs an adventure and agrees to join the show. The production takes place at Aurora Ranch in Wyoming, where Stephanie has an immediate 'meet-rude' with a local named Alex, who mocks her as a 'city girl' looking for 'witty hashtags.' She soon discovers Alex is the son of the ranch owner, Ruth, and will be the guide for her televised dates. Stephanie is introduced to the show's bachelor, Oliver, an advertising executive who is just as camera-shy and awkward as she is. As they go on a series of outdoor dates—hiking, fishing, and kayaking—it becomes clear that while they get along as friends, there is no romantic chemistry. Meanwhile, Stephanie spends her off-camera time bonding with Alex over the history of the ranch and his dreams of expanding the business into a retreat center, an idea his mother Ruth resists. Stephanie also becomes convinced that Alex is destined to be with Kelly, a long-time ranch guest and tech entrepreneur, leading her to suppress her own growing feelings for him. In the final days of filming, Stephanie finally stands up for herself professionally, calling her bosses and demanding the VP promotion she deserves. On the final televised date, she and Oliver have a candid conversation where they both admit they haven't found 'the one' in each other, though the experience has made them both believe that soulmates might actually exist. During the town's Founder's Day celebration, Ruth announces her retirement and hands the ranch over to Alex, finally accepting his vision for the future. Alex finds Stephanie and confesses that he never had feelings for Kelly and was only afraid of the 'high wire' of vulnerability. Stephanie accepts her new promotion but agrees to make a long-distance relationship work with Alex, finally embracing the 'fantasy' of love she once mocked.
