    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The 'Christmas Rat' incident where a rodent crawls on Shane's arm during a tree-shopping trip.
    • The mothers using a 'Baby Face Generator' app to show Lauren and Shane what their future children would look like as a scare tactic.
    • Santa Claus (Doug) locking himself in a break room due to a childhood trauma involving 'light logs' instead of an action figure.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Kath, a festive and somewhat disorganized woman, joining the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Christmas Committee, where she immediately clashes with Barbara, a newly retired accountant who insists on rigid order and spreadsheets. Unbeknownst to each other, both women use the 'Merry Matchmaker' app to set up their adult children: Kath's daughter Lauren, a high-strung architect, and Barbara's son Shane, a charismatic but struggling theater owner. When Lauren and Shane meet for their blind date, they quickly realize their mothers are the ones behind the match. To get their overbearing parents to back off, they strike a deal to 'fake date' until Christmas. As the 'relationship' progresses, Kath and Barbara are horrified to discover that their children are dating the offspring of their workplace rival. The mothers shift from being matchmakers to active saboteurs, concocting plans to prove the couple is incompatible. They organize a Christmas tree shopping trip that ends in a bizarre disaster involving a 'Christmas rat' hiding in the tree, which Shane is forced to catch. Later, Barbara invites Lauren to Shane's improv show, hoping her shyness will create friction. Instead, Lauren joins Shane on stage as 'Marley's Ghost,' and the two grow closer, realizing they actually enjoy each other's company. Shane even decides to keep his theater and apply for a grant based on Lauren's encouragement, moving away from his plan to sell the building. The conflict reaches a boiling point at the Christmas Ball. The moms' meddling is exposed when they try to break the couple up by revealing Shane's initial plan to sell his theater and the fact that the relationship started as a ruse. Feeling betrayed by both their mothers and the lack of transparency, Lauren and Shane break up. However, the mothers realize their behavior was driven by their own fears of retirement and loss of purpose. They reconcile, apologize to their children, and encourage them to follow their hearts. Lauren and Shane decide to date for real, and the two families celebrate Christmas together, finally finding a balance between order and spontaneity.
