    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The 'Angel Poem' ritual performed by nurses whenever a baby leaves the NICU is highly theatrical and specific.
    • The revelation that the protagonist's mentor was the exact nurse who saved her life 30 years ago is an extreme example of the 'Small World' trope.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins at Community Memorial Hospital, where NICU nurse Jenny Miller and her supervisor, Alice Shelby, perform a traditional 'Angel' send-off poem for a premature baby finally going home. The celebratory mood is dampened when Jenny meets the new CFO, Matt Crawford, who has been hired to fix the hospital's failing finances. Matt immediately slashes the budget for the nurses' Christmas party by 25% and, more devastatingly, forces Alice into early retirement. Jenny views Matt as a cold 'hatchet man' who treats people like data points, while Matt insists he is simply making the tough decisions necessary to keep the hospital's doors open. Despite their professional friction, Jenny and Matt experience a series of 'meet-cutes' outside the hospital. Matt's sister, Isabel, runs a community center called 'Forever Young At Heart,' which Matt suggests as a discounted venue for the party. During a trip to a snowy forest to cut down a Christmas tree for the event, Jenny and Matt begin to bond, sharing stories about their pasts and their mutual love for the holiday. Meanwhile, a subplot involves Jenny's mother, Kate, searching for the perfect 30th-anniversary gift for her husband Bob, eventually settling on a model train set he coveted as a child. In the NICU, the stakes rise when a premature baby named James requires urgent heart surgery. The emotional toll on the parents and the specialized care provided by Alice and Jenny begin to soften Matt's analytical perspective. However, the budding romance hits a snag when Jenny overhears Matt discussing further salary reductions on a phone call, leading her to abruptly end their relationship. At the surprise retirement party for Alice, the room is filled with 'angels'—former patients whose lives Alice saved over her decades-long career. In a major emotional turning point, Jenny's mother Kate realizes that Alice was the very nurse who saved Jenny's life when she was born prematurely thirty years prior. Matt arrives at the party not to shut it down, but to announce that he has made an appeal to management. Instead of layoffs, the senior staff has agreed to a voluntary 5% salary cut to keep everyone employed. Alice is offered her job back, the hospital community is preserved, and Jenny and Matt reconcile with a kiss under the Christmas lights.
