Opening
At Angie’s Sunday supper, Gina is welcomed into the foster family, Josh is introduced as the math teacher and track coach, and Ella is brought into the East Heights community as the new English and music teacher.
Inciting incident
Ella discovers the music room is neglected just as the school reveals that extracurricular funding has been cut in half, forcing the music program and track team to compete for limited PTA support.
Rising action
Josh and Ella prepare separate presentations, begin to notice each other’s good intentions, and start helping Gina with her classes while concerns emerge that she may have an undiagnosed learning disability.
Midpoint
The PTA vote deadlocks, so Josh and Ella decide to raise money themselves and then collaborate, which brings them closer and shifts their rivalry into tentative partnership.
Conflict escalates
A Maryland University scout’s interest in Josh’s athlete leads to a major athletics donation, and Ella believes Josh has betrayed her by going behind her back, creating a painful rupture between them.
Climax
Josh and Ella confront the alumni board together and insist that the school should receive support for both sports and music, but the board initially rejects the proposal and walks away.
Resolution
The board changes course and announces a ten-year endowment for East Heights High, Gina gets the help she needs, Andrew proposes to Jenna, and Josh and Ella confess their love and kiss.
