    The premise

Most commended firefighter Steve Lockwood misses his accidentally killed wife Molly terribly. Taking risks not by the book, the hero gets suspended. His kid brother Frank Lockwood fails to help him date again. Then Steve saves freelance-author Grace Harding's life 'accidentally', passing her house on fire. She's encouraged to thank him in person, but already engaged with businessman Cliff, who would be perfect if he weren't almost constantly on business trips.

    • The fiancé is obsessed with his Egyptian cotton shirt even during emotional crises.
    • The climax involves a fire truck being used as a getaway vehicle for a wedding intervention.
    • The 'Firefighter of the Year' pickup line used by the brother.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens by contrasting the lives of Grace Harlen, an organizational expert with a strict 'two-year plan' for her marriage to her workaholic fiancé Cliff, and Steve Lockwood, a decorated firefighter who has become reckless following the death of his wife, Molly. Steve's behavior leads to a suspension from the fire department. Their paths cross when Grace's apartment building catches fire, and Steve, acting off-duty, pulls her from the flames. While Grace is in the hospital, Cliff focuses on replacing her laptop and maintaining their professional momentum, while Grace begins to question her priorities. Seeking to thank her rescuer, Grace visits Steve's firehouse and meets his brother, Frank. She eventually finds Steve volunteering at a local soup kitchen, a place he used to visit with his late wife. Inspired by the firefighters' sense of community and their culinary skills, Grace decides to scrap her corporate book sequel, 'The Organized Workplace,' to write 'The Ladder Company Cookbook,' intending to donate the proceeds to save the struggling soup kitchen. This decision creates a rift with Cliff, who is focused on buying a prestigious house in Kensington and hiring nannies. As Grace and Steve grow closer, Steve shares his grief, explaining that he couldn't save the most important person in his life—his wife—despite his profession. Grace encourages him to 'not postpone the joy,' a sentiment Steve later echoes. Steve eventually returns to duty and performs a heroic rescue of a boy trapped in an elevator shaft, proving he has regained his focus. Despite their mutual feelings, Grace proceeds with her wedding plans until the very last moment. On the wedding day, Steve and Frank race to the church in a fire truck to stop the ceremony, but Steve hesitates at the door. However, Grace has already realized that her path has diverged from Cliff's and calls off the wedding herself. She finds Steve outside the church, still in her wedding dress, and they agree to start a life together that isn't dictated by a schedule, beginning with a simple burger date.
