Fixing Pete

The film opens with Ashley Boyd appearing on the 'Taryn' talk show, showcasing her success as a fashion writer. Her boss, Mrs. Friedlander, offers her the editorship of a new supplement, 'First Look,' on the condition that she successfully makeovers Pete Camden, a popular but unrefined sportswriter whose 'man-child' persona is a liability for his upcoming book tour. Ashley and Pete initially clash; Pete is resistant to change, and Ashley is appalled by his slovenly habits and apartment. The makeover begins with a high-end haircut from Eric T. Lowe and a complete wardrobe overhaul. During a scene where they clean Pete's apartment, a playful food and cleaning-supply fight breaks out, marking the first time Ashley lets her guard down. Ashley teaches Pete the art of conversation, emphasizing that 'listening' is the key to meaningful connection. Pete tests these skills at a fashion show, where he successfully charms a woman named Cynthia, though he realizes he is actually more interested in Ashley. Meanwhile, Ashley's boyfriend, Christopher, a news reporter, is portrayed as her 'perfect' match on paper but is revealed to be self-centered and oblivious to her career needs. Pete's transformation begins to affect his writing, as he starts using fashion terminology like 'dusky dawn' to describe basketball games, much to the chagrin of his editor. The conflict peaks when Christopher accepts a job in New York and expects Ashley to move with him, disregarding her new editor position. Pete, realizing he loves Ashley, appears on the 'Taryn' show for his book tour and publicly confesses his love for her instead of Cynthia. Ashley, who was about to leave for the airport with Christopher, sees the broadcast and realizes her feelings for Pete. Pete chases her through Los Angeles traffic in the rain, eventually finding her at the office. The film concludes with Pete proposing to Ashley, and Ashley accepting, acknowledging that while Pete was 'fixed,' she was transformed as well.
