Why we’d put this one on

A fun, slightly ridiculous opposites-attract premise: a small-town teen's video promposal to his celebrity crush goes viral and actually lands him a prom date, only for the star to fall for the boy's English teacher, the one who secretly wrote those romantic words. Shenae Grimes-Beech plays the Hollywood actress repairing her image, and Andrew W. Walker is the teacher. The pleasures are in the absurd details, like a grown star sitting in on high school classes as an honorary student and a publicist threatening her with a dog food commercial. At 6.1, it is a breezy, good-natured charmer.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with movie star Alex Allen at the premiere of her new film, where her co-star and boyfriend Colin Hartling breaks up with her on the red carpet, cruelly telling her he was 'just acting' when he said he loved her. Meanwhile, in Arlington Heights, David Rogers is a high school 'nobody' who wants to make a mark before graduation. He asks his English teacher, Vincent Walsh, for help writing a 'promposal.' Vincent, a former Army officer and secret poet, gives David a book of his own poetry for inspiration. David uses Vincent's words to create a video inviting Alex Allen to the prom, which goes viral with over a million hits. Alex's publicist, Paige, convinces a reluctant Alex to accept the invitation as a PR stunt to save her 'America's Sweetheart' image. Upon arriving in the small town, Alex is made an 'honorary student' for the week. She meets Vincent when his student driver almost runs her over; not recognizing her, Vincent treats her like a normal person, which Alex finds refreshing. They share a coffee and a 'distraction kiss' when Alex tries to hide from a news report. Alex eventually takes over the prom committee, clashing with the rigid Miss Hope by changing the theme from 'Wild West' to 'Hollywood Dreams.' As Alex and Vincent spend more time together during driving lessons and milkshake dates, a romance blossoms. However, Paige runs a background check on Vincent and discovers his book of poetry, leading Alex to believe Vincent used David to manipulate her into a movie deal. Simultaneously, Miss Hope finds a legal loophole regarding age requirements to ban Alex from attending the prom. In the climax, Alex confronts Vincent and prepares to leave town. However, David confesses to his best friend Heidi (and later Alex) that he plagiarized Vincent's words without the teacher's knowledge. Realizing she was wrong, Alex records an 'unpromposal' video, encouraging David to take Heidi—who has been secretly in love with him—to the dance instead. After giving Heidi a Hollywood makeover, Alex prepares to fly back to L.A. for a new movie role. At the last minute, Vincent arrives at her hotel, explaining that the school board rules don't apply to dates of faculty members. Alex returns to the school as Vincent's date, they share a dance at the prom, and she decides to stay in the small town to pursue a genuine relationship with him.
