    Full story (spoilers)
Settie Rose treats the annual Christmas letter like a high-stakes family assignment, because Holly Hills rewards the best holiday missive with a coveted spot on the Wall of Fame. Her family is lovable but chaotic, and their longtime rival Sue Taylor has dominated the neighborhood with polished letters, perfect decorum, and relentless judgment. Settie believes this year can be different if she finally gets the prose right, even if it means dragging her husband Hank and their children into another round of holiday preparation. Desperate for help, Settie reaches out to novelist Juan Rebolledo Sánchez, whose elegant writing she thinks can transform the Roses into Wall of Fame contenders. Juan is dealing with writer’s block and financial pressure, so he agrees to a short Christmas job in Connecticut. The situation immediately becomes more complicated when Lily returns late from Italy and Sue, seeing flowers and a banner, assumes Juan is Lily’s fiancé. Instead of correcting the misunderstanding, the Roses let the fake engagement stand, which only deepens the family’s holiday lies and comic embarrassment. Juan settles into the Rose household and begins interviewing everyone for material, while Settie tries to manage the family’s traditions, community events, and her own growing panic. The house becomes a revolving door of Christmas chaos: onesies, breakfast meetings, quote-of-the-day rituals, wreath-making competitions, gingerbread-house crises, and endless reminders that Sue is watching. Juan’s presence exposes how much the family cares about being seen as exceptional, even though they are all struggling with their own insecurities. As Juan and Lily spend more time together, their fake engagement starts to feel less fake. Lily reveals that she has not been thriving in Italy and that her acting dreams are tangled up with fear of failure, while Juan opens up about losing his parents young and using writing as a way to control a life that once felt out of control. He encourages Lily to take control of her own story instead of hiding behind spontaneity, and she helps him reconnect with the emotional truth behind his work and his old stories about Chacho the crab. Meanwhile, Sue keeps poking into the Roses’ business and eventually finds Juan’s pages, which she wildly misreads as evidence of some kind of mafia secret. Her suspicions spiral into a full comedic panic, especially when Juan’s family arrives from Puerto Rico and everyone assumes the worst. The misunderstanding peaks during the neighborhood festivities, but it ultimately collapses under the warmth of the Rose household and the obvious affection Juan has for the family he has been writing about. By the end, Settie realizes she cannot win by forcing perfection onto her family’s Christmas letter. She writes the letter herself, honestly and lovingly, acknowledging the flaws, traditions, and small joys that actually define the Roses. Lily takes a step forward in her acting life, Juan finds new inspiration for his novel, and the family comes together for a Christmas that finally feels authentic, joyful, and worthy of celebrating.
