Christmas Island

Kate Gabriel is a dedicated regional pilot who finally lands a high-stakes interview for a corporate position flying the Sharpe family—owners of a global lifestyle brand—to Switzerland for Christmas. After being hired on the spot, Kate departs Los Angeles with Thomas and Helen Sharpe and their two children, Cali and Finn. However, while crossing the Atlantic, they encounter a massive, unforecasted storm. Oliver, an air traffic controller in Nova Scotia, orders Kate to land immediately. Despite her initial resistance, she touches down at a small airport near Christmas Island. The Sharpes are devastated to be stuck in a town with spotty internet and no luxury amenities, especially since they have a major business pitch scheduled in Zurich. To save her job, Kate offers to act as a temporary nanny and holiday coordinator for the family. Kate and the Sharpes are taken in by Oliver’s family: his father Jim, the local postmaster, and his sister Maggie, the mayor. Over the next few days, Kate and Oliver guide the Sharpes through eccentric local traditions, including making 'chicken bones' candy and building a Christmas tree out of lobster traps. Subplots emerge as Thomas and Helen realize they have become disconnected from their children through overworking; Cali feels neglected, and Finn worries Santa won't find them. Kate also shares her personal trauma—her pilot father died on Christmas Eve, causing her to avoid the holiday for years. Oliver reveals his own struggle: he is an air traffic controller who is terrified of flying because he lost a family member at sea due to a captain's negligence during a storm. As the storm persists, the group works together to digitize hundreds of letters to Santa when the physical mail is grounded, a project led by the tech-savvy Cali. This act of service brings the family closer and softens Kate’s heart toward Oliver. On Christmas Eve, the weather finally clears. Kate is cleared for takeoff, and the Sharpes prepare to leave for Switzerland. However, at the last moment, the family realizes they would rather stay on the island and enjoy a simple holiday together. Kate realizes her feelings for Oliver and the island are stronger than her desire for the 'hamster wheel' of international flight. In the climax, Kate decides to stay, the Sharpes offer her a permanent position with a more flexible schedule, and Oliver finally agrees to let Kate help him overcome his fear of flying.
