Big Sky River

The film opens with Tara Kendall saying a difficult goodbye to her step-daughter Erin in New York. Tara is a teacher who has recently finalized a messy divorce from James, who is already seeing a new woman named Bethany. Seeking peace, Tara travels to Parable, Montana, a place she remembers fondly from a childhood summer camp. Upon arrival, she has a brief encounter with Boone Taylor, the local sheriff, who warns her about leaving her purse unattended. Tara settles into a rental house owned by Joanna Barlow and finds herself tasked with caring for a flock of chickens, which leads to her first interactions with Boone's sons, Griffin and Fletcher, and his teenage son Dawson, who helps her with 'poultry management.' As the summer progresses, Tara and Boone's paths cross frequently. Boone, a widower who lost his wife Corrie three years prior, is hesitant to date but finds himself drawn to Tara's resilience and wit. Their relationship deepens through a series of classic small-town moments: Boone rescues her from a raccoon 'home invasion,' they dance at the local saloon while country star Casey Elfman performs, and they go on a trail ride using Boone's inseparable horses, Bert and Ernie. During a fishing trip, Tara catches her first fish and they share their past traumas—Tara's feeling of inadequacy in her marriage and Boone's enduring love for his late wife. The emotional stakes rise when Erin arrives in Parable. She is struggling with her father's decision to send her to boarding school and her resentment toward his new fiancée. Erin finds a friend in Dawson, but her world shatters when her father, James, calls to announce he is moving his wedding up to the following week. Feeling abandoned and unwanted, Erin runs away, taking a rowboat out onto the dangerous river. Boone and Tara lead a frantic search, eventually finding Erin trapped in the rapids. Boone performs a heroic rescue, and the experience solidifies the bond between the two families. In the aftermath, Tara finally stands up to James, informing him that Erin will be staying with her in Montana for the time being. James, humbled by the news of the accident, agrees. In the final act, Tara realizes she cannot return to her old life in New York. She accepts a teaching position in Parable and confesses her love to Boone. The movie concludes with the two families coming together for a soccer game, signaling the start of a new, blended life in Big Sky country.
