Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

  • A former 1990s boy-band heartthrob hides in plain sight as a community-center activities director under his birth name.
  • A morning-show producer stakes her executive promotion on reuniting a one-hit boy band in only three weeks.
  • A community-center fundraiser is promoted through a secret boy-band livestream and a nationally televised beach concert.
  • A Fourth of July family meal features a red, white, and blue Jell-O mold containing ham.

Full story (spoilers)
Kaitlin Thomson works as the indispensable segment producer for Merrie and Mason in the Morning and hopes to become the show's next executive producer. Her chance arrives when the show's planned Summer Beach Bash headliner, Winkles the lifeguard dog, is poached by rival host Tabitha. With ratings and sponsors at risk, Kaitlin pitches reuniting Absolutely Yeah!, the beloved one-hit 1990s boy band whose album Hotter Than July remains a summer classic. Merrie agrees to give Kaitlin the promotion if she can make the reunion happen within three weeks. Kaitlin finds the band's former members, Chip and Juan Carlos, willing to participate, but the lead singer Derrick Dane is difficult to locate. She eventually discovers that Derrick's real name is Derrick DeWitt and that he works as an activities director at Wake Street Community Center on Long Island. Derrick rejects the reunion because fame left him feeling exploited and disconnected, and he now prefers helping local teenagers through the center's after-school programs. When Kaitlin explains that the center is in danger of closing, Derrick agrees to consider performing if she can increase ticket sales for its variety show. Kaitlin throws herself into the community-center project, recruiting choreographer Paul Becker, improving the teenagers' performance, and creating social-media promotions with Chip and Juan Carlos. She and Derrick spend increasing amounts of time together, sharing pizza, dancing, and conversations about their lives. Derrick learns that Kaitlin's relentless ambition comes from wanting to bring positivity into people's homes, while Kaitlin learns that his withdrawal from music stems from losing control of his identity and being cheated by his former manager and record company. Under pressure from sponsors, Kaitlin announces on national television that Derrick will join the Absolutely Yeah! reunion even though he has not agreed to it. She and the teens secretly prepare a promotional livestream with the band, and the publicity succeeds in nearly selling out the variety show. However, Derrick discovers the deception and feels that Kaitlin has repeated the same pattern of using him without respecting his wishes. Although he acknowledges that she has fulfilled the bargain by boosting ticket sales, he tells her that he cannot return to being Derrick Dane and refuses to perform. Derrick's former bandmates confront him about the unresolved breakup and remind him that he has never properly explained his feelings to them. They also point out that the teenagers already know about his past and admire him for who he is now. Meanwhile, Kaitlin accepts that she may lose her job and realizes that her need to fix everything has caused her to overstep. At the Summer Beach Bash, Absolutely Yeah! begins performing with the Wake Street teens without Derrick, but he arrives during the song and joins them, choosing to share his music on his own terms. The performance raises enough attention and support to fully fund the community center's programs. Merrie promotes Kaitlin to executive producer and arranges a television segment to spotlight the center, while Derrick publicly credits Kaitlin for making the opportunity possible. Jordan's military father also returns in time to reunite with his family. After apologizing to each other, Derrick admits that Kaitlin's determination and passion changed his life, and he asks her on a genuine date without agendas; she accepts with an enthusiastic "Absolutely. Yeah."
