Murder 101: If Wishes Were Horses

The story opens at Santa Anita Race Track, where radio hosts Miranda and Barry hype Heaven Love's final race and the horse's place in racing history. Mike Bryant arrives with his nephew Ben just in time to miss the finish, and the Brawley family celebrates the horse's retirement. The scene establishes Heaven Love as an extraordinary stud prospect worth a fortune, while also introducing the Brawleys' strained family dynamic and trainer Bernard Alger's importance to the farm. The next day, the celebration turns into a crisis: Heaven Love is reported stolen from the Brawley stables, and Bernard Alger soon turns up dead in a burned barn. After being targeted and briefly held by Rene De Leon, an ex-con and master conman, Jonathan discovers an old 1911 crime involving stable fires and insured racehorses. The historical scam involved replacing valuable horses with old nags, burning the stable, and collecting insurance, and De Leon is using the same blueprint in the present. The team realizes the fire was meant to fake Heaven Love's death, while the horse was actually being moved for illicit overseas sale. As the evidence builds, the family secrets come into focus. Jake Brawley is deeply in debt from gambling losses tied to a past racetrack betting fraud, and he had once testified against De Leon. Bernard Alger had been caught between loyalty to the family, his own conscience, and the dangerous scheme. Jonathan and Mike learn that Bernard was murdered before the barn fire, then placed there to make it look like he died in the blaze. A key clue is De Leon's use of the same kind of riddle-based misdirection and the discovery that the horse's DNA could have been planted to support a false death report. The final stretch brings the truth out in the open. Mike, Jonathan, Diana, and Detective Sergeant Joanne Matterson piece together that Jacob and Jake Brawley were trying to cover their financial collapse through the fake kidnapping and insurance plan, with De Leon handling the criminal logistics and Bernie becoming a fatal loose end. The police move in as the conspirators are confronted, and the shipment to the Middle East is intercepted in time to recover Heaven Love alive. In the end, the Brawley family survives the scandal, Pops gets a birthday surprise, and Mike and Jonathan close the case with their usual mix of wit, teamwork, and stubbornness.
