    How unusual is it?

Middle of the road, with a twist β€” an enemies-to-lovers arc keeps it from being totally by-the-book.

    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The characters explicitly measure time using Taylor Swift album releases (e.g., 'pre-folklore era').
    • Emily's suspension is partially due to her pouring a sports drink on a referee.
    • The 'lava field' soccer drill involves children pretending the grass is lava while playing.
    • The heavy emphasis on the 'oat milk' debate as a character-defining conflict for the cafe owner.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Emily Chen, a legendary but hot-headed professional soccer player for the Chicago Premier, being ejected from a game for arguing with a referee. Her coach, Avila, suspends her indefinitely, citing her recent behavior as a liability and suggesting she needs rest to process the death of her best friend and former teammate, Caroline. Emily's brother Brandon and niece Ava convince her to visit them in the small town of Southern Pines. Upon arrival, Emily meets Ian at a local cafe where they have a minor disagreement over oat milk. Later, Emily joins a pickup soccer game and accidentally injures Ian, only to discover he is the head coach of Ava's soccer team, the Purple Thunder. With Ian on crutches, Emily is recruited as the assistant coach. The central conflict arises from their opposing philosophies: Emily is hyper-competitive and focused on professional-grade drills, while Ian believes youth sports should be about teamwork and enjoyment, utilizing unconventional drills like 'the field is lava.' A subplot involves Ava secretly auditioning for a production of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night,' fearing that her desire to act will disappoint her soccer-centric family. As Emily and Ian spend more time together, they participate in a ropes course where Ian helps Emily overcome her fear of heights, and they bond over a cooking lesson where Ian shares his pastβ€”having given up a soccer scholarship for a marriage that eventually ended because his wife chose a big-city career over their life together. Emily encourages Ian to revisit his dream of opening a local sports training complex. Just as the Purple Thunder reaches the semi-finals and Emily and Ian's romance blossoms, Emily is reinstated to her professional team and called back to Chicago immediately. She leaves abruptly, causing tension with Ian and disappointing Ava. However, while back in the professional world, Emily realizes that her success feels empty without her family and the community she found in Southern Pines. She makes a surprise return for Ava's play and the soccer championship. In the resolution, Emily reveals she has negotiated a transfer to a team in Seattle to be closer to home and has committed to helping Ian launch his sports complex. The movie ends with the Purple Thunder winning the championship and Emily and Ian celebrating their new life together as a team.
