    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with a national media frenzy surrounding a letter addressed to Santa Claus from a child named 'Chris' in Seacliff, Washington. The letter is a desperate cry for help, stating that if Santa cannot help his unemployed father and hungry mother, Chris will 'go to heaven to be with the angels.' M.J. Jensen, a career-driven and cynical reporter from Seattle, is assigned to the story. Simultaneously, David Reynolds, a struggling writer who grew up in Seacliff as a foster child, returns to town. Due to the influx of media, the local inn is overbooked, forcing M.J. and David to share a makeshift room in a study. As they begin their search for the mysterious child, they find a town in decline; the local dam has destroyed the salmon fishing industry, leading to the cancellation of the 102nd annual Christmas play. They frequently cross paths with Max, a mysterious handyman and artist who creates beautiful paintings of angels—one of which bears a striking resemblance to M.J. David reveals to M.J. that when he was nine, he ran away into the woods and was saved from freezing to death by a mysterious lumberjack who disappeared. The investigation leads them to Megan, the Mayor's daughter, who confesses she wrote the letters as 'Chris' to get her feuding parents to notice her and stop their impending divorce. M.J.'s cameraman pressures her to exploit the girl for a national scoop, but M.J., moved by Megan's plight and her growing feelings for David, chooses to protect the child's identity. During a live broadcast, M.J. delivers a heartfelt speech about the 'magic of Christmas' and the importance of looking out for lonely children. The town's power fails, but David uses 2,000 candles he purchased from Max to light the cannery, allowing the Christmas play to proceed. In the final moments, David realizes that Max is the same man who saved his life 25 years ago. Max admits he is an angel before disappearing, leaving David and M.J. to begin their new life together in Seacliff.
