    • A high-stakes climax involving a jousting pole in a pizza arcade
    • The 'Pizza & Play' manager being obsessed with a 10th birthday party that went 'sideways'
    • A three-person murder conspiracy among college students over a baseball position and a T.A. job

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens at a university where Aurora Teagarden is the T.A. for Professor Lindo’s true crime literature class, which is currently focusing on the history of poisoning. Student-athlete Kevin Lambert is struggling to stay awake in class due to the pressure of baseball tryouts, where he is competing for the starting shortstop position against the aggressive Tanner Carpenter. After class, Aurora meets Kevin's girlfriend, Jenny, and observes a tense interaction with Owen Parker, a former friend of Kevin's who seems to be stalking Jenny. Meanwhile, Cal Watson, the former T.A. who was fired for grade tampering, unsuccessfully demands a recommendation letter from Professor Lindo. Aurora’s mother, Aida, also joins the campus as a curriculum consultant, leading to humorous mother-daughter friction. The plot intensifies when Aurora finds Kevin dead in his car outside the R'n'R Diner; his blue-tinged lips suggest poisoning. The autopsy confirms a lethal dose of sodium nitrite, a chemical used in dental offices and meat curing. Aurora and Professor Lindo begin their own investigation, identifying four primary suspects: Cal (motive: revenge for being ratted out by Kevin), Owen (motive: jealousy over Jenny), Tanner (motive: the starting shortstop position), and Jenny (who wrote a paper on sodium nitrite). Security footage from 'Pizza & Play' shows all four suspects handling Kevin’s protein shake at different times. As the police find planted evidence—sodium nitrite in Owen’s car and a bottle insert in Tanner’s bag—the investigation becomes mired in contradictions. Aurora eventually realizes that the suspects aren't working against each other, but together. Drawing a parallel to a 'collaborative murder' plot from their class readings, she deduces that Cal, Owen, and Tanner conspired to kill Kevin and intentionally left evidence pointing to one another to create reasonable doubt. In a final confrontation at Pizza & Play, Aurora and her friend Sally are cornered by the trio. After a brief struggle involving a jousting pole and a walk-in freezer, the police arrive to arrest the conspirators. The film ends with Aurora deciding to continue her true crime studies, having proven that academic knowledge can be a vital tool for justice.
