MatchMaker Mysteries

3 movies

MatchMaker Mysteries asks a genuinely fun question: if you can read two strangers well enough to pair them for life, can you read a room full of murder suspects? Danica McKellar plays Angie Dove, a professional matchmaker and TV host who keeps catching the detail everyone else walked past, much to the irritation of Victor Webster's Detective Kyle Carter, who would very much like her to stay home. Bruce Boxleitner plays her retired-detective father, and he is always game to help her snoop, which is half the charm.

Three films, 2019 to 2021, and they hold the highest ratings of any Hallmark mystery franchise I'd point you to, hovering in the mid-sixties. These sit at the cozy end of the murder spectrum: a glamorous victim, a tidy circle of suspects, a slow-burn will-they-won't-they between Angie and Kyle, and absolutely nothing that will keep you up at night. If you want a whodunit you can knit through, this is the one.

MatchMaker Mysteries movies in order

Each film is a self-contained case, so any order works. Release order is the better choice because it lets the Angie-and-Kyle romance build naturally across the three.

  1. 1
    MatchMaker Mysteries: A Killer Engagement

    MatchMaker Mysteries: A Killer Engagement(2019)

The opener, and the film that sets the whole dynamic in motion. A woman Angie (Danica McKellar) successfully paired is murdered at her own engagement party, and the obvious suspect feels too obvious to her. Detective Kyle Carter (Victor Webster) wants her nowhere near the case. Bruce Boxleitner arrives as her dad. Watch for Angie's pet theory that the shape of someone's lips reveals their personality, which she deploys with total confidence. A breezy place to start.

  2. 2
    MatchMaker Mysteries: A Fatal Romance

    MatchMaker Mysteries: A Fatal Romance(2020)

The highest-rated of the three at 6.6, and the most fun to watch. A famous romance author is poisoned during a literary panel Angie (Danica McKellar) is moderating, dropping the suspect list squarely inside the cutthroat world of romance publishing: ghostwriters, secret affairs, professional jealousy. Kyle (Victor Webster) works the case, her father tags along, and there is a wonderfully pointless subplot about Dad's painting class. Reads body language for a living, applies it to a crime scene. Easy recommend.

  3. 3
MatchMaker Mysteries: The Art of the Kill

MatchMaker Mysteries: The Art of the Kill(2021)

The newest entry, moving Angie (Danica McKellar), her father, and Detective Carter (Victor Webster) into a museum where theft, blackmail, and fraud are tangled up among the art crowd. Catherine Cyran directs. It is the lowest-profile film of the set and the formula is by now familiar, but the gallery backdrop is a pleasant change of scene and the sleuthing trio still clicks. A fine close to the run.
