    Full story (spoilers)
Madeline Ellis is a veteran Hollywood actress whose life begins to unravel when her agent fails to secure her a lead role, her long-time partner Richard is caught cheating with a younger starlet, and her doctor discovers a lump that requires a biopsy. Simultaneously, she is contacted by an adoption agency on behalf of the daughter she gave up 38 years prior. Fearing the paparazzi and refusing to fly, Madeline hires Sarah—a friend of her assistant Katie—to drive her from Los Angeles to New York. The trip starts with friction as Madeline’s diva behavior, including her refusal to drink from plastic and her habit of throwing phones out of windows, clashes with Sarah’s rugged, outdoorsy nature. When Sarah’s car breaks down in a small mountain town, the pair is forced to slow down. Madeline meets Carl, a welder and artist who has abandoned the city for a simpler life. Carl challenges Madeline to rethink her career and 'simplify' her existence. During this stay, Sarah takes Madeline kayaking, forcing the actress to confront her fear of water and vulnerability. This experience bonds the two women, and Madeline learns that Sarah is a college dropout who is estranged from her mother, Liz, following a bad breakup with a woman named Emily. As they continue East, Madeline insists on stopping in Columbus, Ohio, to force a reconciliation between Sarah and Liz. During the visit, Madeline uses her own history of loss to convince Sarah to value her relationship with her mother. Sarah eventually agrees to return to college, while Liz provides Madeline with the warmth of a home-cooked meal and a sense of stability she has lacked. Upon arriving in New York, Madeline undergoes her biopsy and receives the news that the lump is benign. With a new lease on life, she finally meets her biological daughter, Rose, who is a successful doctor. They share a poignant moment where Madeline explains the pain of giving her up and the joy of seeing her thrive. The film concludes with Madeline purchasing an old theater in the mountain town to start a film festival, moving away from Hollywood to focus on 'who she loves and who loves her back,' while Sarah heads back to school with Madeline's financial support.
