Redemption in Cherry Springs

Melanie Abrams, a renowned investigative reporter for the Boston Chronicle, returns to Cherry Springs to sell her late mother's home and find peace after a controversial story in Fall River led to a worker's death. She reunites with her Uncle Joe and childhood friends Rachel and Tony Patel. During a festival for the new Twila Birch Community Center, Melanie notices Tony acting suspiciously, arguing with his sister Sarah Jane and taking secretive phone calls. When Tony fails to return home, his car is found abandoned with a blown tire and a roll of cash nearby. Melanie uses her investigative skills to assist the local detective, Jake Collins, a former NYC officer who moved to the small town after his wife and partner was killed in the line of duty. They discover that Tony was secretly suffering from pancreatic cancer and was desperate to provide for Rachel's future. The case turns into a murder investigation when Tony's body is pulled from the river with a gunshot wound to the back. Melanie and Jake investigate several leads, including Sarah Jane, who forged her mother's signature to sell the family home, and William Dixon, a petty criminal who broke into Rachel's house looking for Tony's hidden cash. The stakes escalate when Melanie's car brakes are tampered with, nearly causing a fatal accident. Melanie eventually clones the phone of Dan Birch, the community center's founder, and discovers he was laundering money to cover gambling debts. After Dan is found murdered, Melanie confronts Andy, Tony's business partner at the auto shop. Andy confesses to running a drug smuggling operation using modified car mufflers but claims the drug dealers killed Dan. Jake arrives just in time to arrest Andy before he can harm Melanie. In the aftermath, Rachel gifts the auto shop to their young employee Ryan, and Melanie decides to stay in Cherry Springs to write her book, finally finding the redemption she sought.
