Mystery Woman: Redemption

Samantha Kinsey is busy at her bookstore while plumbing repairs drag on, and she is also helping out men from The Haven, a local recovery shelter run by Reverend Tucker. The day takes a strange turn when a rare first edition, The Bell Tower Murders, goes missing from the store. Soon afterward, Jim Carter, a quiet visitor who had shown a deep love of mysteries and taken an interest in Samantha's shop, is found murdered under suspicious circumstances. Chief Connors treats the death as a possible robbery, but Samantha quickly realizes Jim's story does not add up. Jim had left his wallet behind, and inside a box he intended for Samantha are a letter to his daughter, a Silver Star, a key, and coded notes. The letter reveals his guilt over abandoning his daughter years ago, and the clues begin to suggest that he was not merely looking for her but also trying to solve one last mystery before making amends. As Samantha and Philby work through the box's contents, they discover that Jim Carter was actually Jim Wolfe, a veteran with a buried military past. The codes point them toward Ray Creekwater mystery novels and then toward a hidden message tied to Four Corners and other literary references. The investigation expands into Jim's wartime history, where he, Johnny Dell, and Alan Butler were involved in a secret Cambodian mission and found a jeweled Buddhist statue. The story behind the statue becomes clearer: a diamond had been removed, hidden, and then passed into a chain of deceit and regret. At first, Samantha suspects the men at The Haven, especially Murphy, whose criminal record and hostility make him look guilty. But the evidence keeps shifting. Someone mugged Samantha and stole the box, someone shot at the bookstore, and Tyler Dell, Johnny Dell's son and the plumbing contractor working at the store, keeps acting suspiciously. Tyler lied about hiring a temp named Eddie, used the plumbing work to destroy evidence, and tried to throw suspicion onto the men at The Haven and into the wrong direction entirely. Philby and Samantha eventually realize Tyler is behind the murder. The key clue is the weapon: a broken screwdriver-like tool that matches the plumbing damage in the store and the wound on Jim's body. Tyler had been following Jim, trying to recover the key and the hidden diamond, and he killed him when the plan started to unravel. The final confrontation comes at the bookstore, where Tyler threatens Samantha and Philby with a gun, but police arrive in time to stop him. After the arrest, Samantha solves the last part of the puzzle by decoding the final clue from Jim's note and locating the diamond hidden in a gargoyle. The treasure is returned to where it belongs, and Jim's daughter, Kerry Wolfe, arrives at the end to receive his letter and learn the truth about the father she never knew. Samantha gives Kerry the final message, completing Jim's attempt at redemption and bringing closure to the case.
