The premise

She finds her and her husband, Mark McPhillips, murder suspects. Back home, the arrival of an undercover secret agent requires unorthodox help from his retired colleague Philby.

Full story (spoilers)
Samantha Kinsey's story opens with a flirtatious eye exam that turns into a date with Ben, her doctor. Their chemistry is immediate and goofy, and after he teases her about not needing glasses, Samantha reveals a bigger secret to her friend Cassie: she has just learned she is adopted, after stumbling on old papers while applying for financial aid. That discovery sends her looking for her birth mother, Hannah McPhillips, whose last known address is in the small California town of Whiptail.
When Samantha reaches Hannah's house, she finds the place swarming with police because a man has been shot inside. Hannah is devastated and confused, and Sheriff Powell quickly treats her as a possible suspect. Samantha stays involved, even though she is told to keep out of it, because she wants answers about both the murder and her own identity. At the same time, the story reveals that the dead man is Van Jefferson, someone from Hannah's past who had been calling her repeatedly and whose name clearly rattles her.
As Samantha follows the paper trail, she learns that Jefferson and his partner Carl Delsohn were involved in insurance fraud and staged accidents. Her inquiries also uncover that Hannah works in insurance and had access to confidential client information, giving Jefferson leverage over her. The case becomes more personal when Samantha learns Hannah is not just her birth mother but also the mother of Francie, the young woman Samantha has been talking to at the house; Francie is therefore Samantha's half-sister.
The investigation gets messier as the sheriff looks at other possibilities, including Hannah's husband Mark McPhillips and Delsohn. Samantha and Ben keep comparing notes, while Cassie and the quirky local ally Philby provide comedic support and practical help. Tension spikes when Samantha is shot at while snooping around Delsohn's office, proving the case involves dangerous criminals and not just family secrets. The pressure forces everyone to confront the possibility that Hannah's lies were partly self-protective and partly tied to a decades-old relationship with Jefferson.
In the end, Francie breaks down and admits the truth: she confronted Jefferson after learning he was blackmailing Hannah, and in a panic she shot him with her father's gun. Samantha realizes that Francie acted in fear and anger rather than cold-blooded malice, but she still insists Francie must tell the truth and turn herself in. Hannah is cleared, Samantha finally understands why she was given up, and she begins the painful process of accepting her birth family while continuing her relationship with Ben. A separate comic subplot about psychic former agent George Robetta and the police chief runs alongside the mystery, adding the movie's signature oddball Hallmark flavor.
