    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Gordie Howe's retirement ceremony in Detroit, where he is honored for 25 years of service to the Red Wings. Despite the accolades, Gordie is unhappy in his new front-office role, describing it as the 'mushroom business' where he is kept in the dark and fed manure. His sons, Mark and Marty, are playing junior hockey for the Toronto Marlies, but their path to the NHL is blocked by age restrictions. When the rival World Hockey Association (WHA) forms, the Houston Aeros draft both boys. Realizing the WHA has no age minimums or maximums, Gordie’s wife and agent, Colleen, orchestrates a deal for Gordie to come out of retirement and play on the same team as his sons. The move to Houston is met with hostility from Detroit owner Bruce Norris, who brands Gordie a traitor. In Texas, Gordie struggles with the intense heat and the physical toll of returning to professional sports at age 45. His sons also face pressure; Mark suffers from stress-induced migraines, and both boys are subjected to locker room hazing by teammates like Smokey, who are skeptical of the 'old man' and his 'brats.' The family dynamic is tested when Mark gives a magazine interview calling his father a 'dirty old man' on the ice, leading to a confrontation about Gordie's aggressive playing style and his role as a 'policeman' for his sons. As the season progresses, the 'Howe Line' finds its rhythm. Gordie breaks a scoring drought, and the Aeros become a dominant force. A subplot involves assistant coach Doug Harvey, who struggles with alcoholism and eventually leaves the team, serving as a cautionary tale for the boys about the fleeting nature of professional sports. Despite a hairline fracture in his leg late in the season, Gordie pushes through the pain. The Aeros face the 'Fighting Saints' in a brutal playoff series characterized by physical violence and taunts. The film culminates in the Aeros winning the WHA Championship (the Avco Cup). The story concludes with a flash-forward to the 1980 NHL All-Star game, where a 52-year-old Gordie Howe receives a standing ovation in Detroit, signifying his lasting legacy and the eventual merger of the two leagues.
