    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist literally uses dog training manuals to manipulate her husband's behavior.
    • The use of 'treats' (cookies) as a behavioral reinforcement tool for a grown man.
    • A secondary character (Aaron) is described as being so 'trained' that he is no longer himself.
    • The protagonist's research notes compare human contrition to a puppy's emotional state.
    • The plot involves making a husband jealous of a dog by pretending the dog's name belongs to a human lover.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Jillian James promoting her book 'How to Pick Your Second Husband' on a talk show, where she argues that marriage should be approached like a business transaction rather than a matter of the heart. Her personal life contradicts her professional success; her husband, Justin, feels neglected and unappreciated. After a disastrous award ceremony where Justin fails to wear a suit, he surprises Jillian with a trip to Paris for their anniversary. Jillian refuses to go due to a book deadline, prompting Justin to leave for Europe alone. During his absence, Jillian's friend Nicole, a dog trainer, explains how she 'trained' her own husband, Aaron, using canine behavioral techniques. Jillian is skeptical but eventually takes a 'loaner' puppy named Henry and begins studying dog training manuals. When Justin returns, Jillian applies these techniques—using positive reinforcement, 'treats' (homemade cookies), and a softer tone of voice—to modify his behavior. To keep him on his toes, she lies about the dog's name, calling him 'George,' and allows Justin to believe 'Henry' is a mysterious male friend. The experiment initially works, as Justin becomes more attentive and even starts wearing suits. However, the deception collapses when Justin and Aaron find Jillian's research notes in her office. The notes explicitly compare Justin's behavior to a puppy's, including observations on 'contrition' and 'unconditional affection.' Justin is deeply offended, feeling his manhood has been stripped away, and he moves out to stay with Aaron. Jillian's mother, Mona, who has been cynical about men throughout the film, surprisingly encourages Jillian to fight for her marriage. Jillian realizes that she was the one who needed 'training' to appreciate her husband's true nature. She tracks Justin down at a bistro, apologizes for her manipulative behavior, and admits she would choose him all over again. They reconcile, and the film ends with Jillian writing a new, more heart-centered book titled 'How to Pick Your Second Husband First,' while incorporating 'puppy therapy' into her practice.
