    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist's wife abandons her newborn baby and husband to go back to being a 'prom queen' in Idaho.
    • A room full of Harvard students standing up to sing 'The Wheels on the Bus' in unison during a Calculus review.
    • The landlady Dorothy reads 'auras' and uses tarot cards to predict John's academic success.
    • The film depicts a teen pregnancy and a broken marriage, which are extremely rare themes for the Hallmark brand.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens at West Boise High School's prom, where star quarterback John Patton and head cheerleader Kathy Blair are crowned King and Queen. Their celebration is short-lived when Kathy reveals she is eight weeks pregnant. Despite John's mother urging him not to abandon his Harvard scholarship and Kathy's mother warning her that she is 'just a girl' unprepared for womanhood, the couple marries and moves into Harvard's married student housing. John immediately feels the pressure of his scholarship requirements under the watchful, skeptical eye of Dean Frost, while Kathy takes a job as a bank teller to support them. As the semester progresses, John struggles with a difficult Calculus course taught by the demanding Professor Kowal, while Kathy's isolation grows. After their son Adam is born, Kathy suffers from what appears to be postpartum depression and a deep sense of regret, believing she 'trapped' John into marriage. She struggles to bond with the baby, who seems to only stop crying for John. In a shocking turn for a Hallmark film, Kathy decides she cannot handle the life they've built; she tells John she 'misses her crown' and returns to Boise alone, leaving John to raise Adam by himself. John is forced to move out of married housing and finds a room with Dorothy, a quirky, 'aura-reading' landlady who becomes his support system. The conflict peaks when Adam falls ill with a virus during finals week. Exhausted and unable to find childcare, John brings Adam to his Calculus review, leading to a surreal moment where Professor Kowal commands the entire Harvard class to stand and sing 'The Wheels on the Bus' to soothe the crying infant. Despite missing his final exam to care for his sick son, John's dedication is witnessed by Dean Frost at a local drugstore. Moved by his devotion and realizing she judged him too harshly, the Dean grants him a second chance and childcare assistance. The film concludes with John's graduation, where he reflects on his journey as a 'Freshman Father' who successfully earned his degree with his son by his side.
