    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • An archaeological romance centered on a bee-themed ancient fresco and a secret honey road.
    • Greek prophecy figures called the Thriae are treated as part of a local family legend.
    • The central treasure is not gold but a box used to transport bees to the New World.
    • A honey festival, bee therapy, and an ancient shrine are all woven into the romance plot.

    Full story (spoilers)
Austen Morgan is in Malta giving a lecture on a seventeenth-century Jesuit settlement and the diary of Jacques De Beauvoir, hoping to turn the fragmentary evidence into a major archaeological discovery that will secure his university funding and tenure. At the same time, Port Grace is preparing for its first honey festival, and local beekeeper Eva Vella-Calleja is juggling the apiary, her sister Chloe's marketing ideas, and a town full of bee-related obligations. Austen and Eva collide literally when he nearly gets hit walking in the road, immediately establishing their snappy, skeptical chemistry. Their paths cross again when bees begin appearing in the library, leading Eva to a hole in a window frame and then to a hidden fresco in an old wall. Austen recognizes the painting as potentially significant and asks to study it, but the mayor insists that he work under Eva's supervision while she handles the bee rescue. As they analyze the fresco together, Austen notices gold leaf and ancient imagery that suggest the mural is more than decoration, and Eva realizes the symbols may map locations around Malta. The investigation sends them to the apiary, to the ancient "gold tower" near Delimara, and eventually to Marsaxlokk and other historical sites. Along the way they trade teasing about honey, cars, and academic life, and their attraction grows into a first kiss after an evening together. Austen admits that his marriage ended badly when his ex-wife left him for her interpreter, while Eva reveals that she returned to Malta after her mother died and has been carrying the apiary on her own. Their bond deepens because both are loyal to their work and both are stuck between places they love. The map on the fresco becomes clearer after an infrared scan reveals three women in Greek style: the Thriae, or Bee Maidens. Austen and Eva realize the painted symbols point not to pirate treasure, but to an old honey road and to a hidden history of bees and harvest blessings across Port Grace. Meanwhile, pressure mounts: Heritage Malta claims jurisdiction, Austen's deadline to submit a proposal is imminent, and Eva and Chloe finally confront the strain of running the apiary without sharing responsibilities evenly. At the climax, the clues lead them beneath a pile of rocks to a shrine dedicated to the Thriae, where they find sealed jars, old baskets, and a box used to transport bees. Austen realizes the Jesuit priest's lost "prosperity" was not gold at all, but Maltese bees brought to the New World, which helped the settlers flourish through pollination. The discovery validates both the fresco and the diary, turning the mystery into a once-in-a-lifetime archaeological find. In the resolution, Austen submits his proposal and later learns that his research funding is accepted, with the condition that he work on site for Heritage Malta. Eva and Chloe also repair their relationship and agree to run the apiary together as partners, giving the business new ideas and new energy. A month later Austen returns to Port Grace, and he and Eva pick up their relationship with the promise of a future that balances work, home, and the honey-sweet life they have found together.
