Why we’d put this one on

Brooke Burns is a beach-loving flight attendant who misses her connection to Bali after helping a kid get safely reunited with her dad, Jonathan (Tom Everett Scott). Stranded in Chicago, she joins them on a quest to uncover how her own late parents first met decades earlier. It is a sweet single-dad romance with a treasure-hunt-through-old-photos spine. The aviation-world flavor is fun: there is an "Unaccompanied Grown-up" badge gag and a flight attendant hailed as a legend for brokering an armrest truce. At weirdness 4 it stays grounded and cozy. A warm, easy pick when you want a Christmas movie that travels a little.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Sydney, a highly skilled flight attendant known for her ability to handle difficult passengers, preparing for her final flight before a planned solo vacation in Bali. On the flight to Chicago, she is tasked with caring for Leah, an 'Unaccompanied Minor' (UM) who is flying home to her father after visiting her grandparents. Sydney and Leah bond over the fact that both of their mothers have passed away, with Sydney comforting the girl by telling her their mothers are 'angels' watching over them. Upon landing in Chicago, Leah's father, Jonathan, is delayed by airport security. Sydney chooses to miss her tight connection to Bali to stay with Leah until Jonathan arrives. When Jonathan finally appears, he is revealed to be a struggling columnist with a looming deadline for a Christmas story. After Sydney's attempts to find a new flight to Bali fail, Jonathan proposes a deal: he will help her investigate the mystery of how her parents met in Chicago (based on a locket and old photos she carries) if she allows him to write about the journey for his column. Sydney agrees and is quickly swept into Jonathan’s large, festive family, participating in traditions like tree decorating and cookie making. Their investigation leads them first to a Christmas tree farm where Sydney’s father worked during college, and then to an ice rink in City Park. Along the way, Leah presents Sydney with a handmade 'UG' (Unaccompanied Grown-up) badge, signaling her acceptance into the family. As the connection between Sydney and Jonathan deepens, Sydney receives news that she has been offered her dream job posting in Rome, which requires her to leave immediately. This creates a conflict between her lifelong desire for global adventure and the new sense of belonging she feels in Chicago. On Christmas Eve, Jonathan’s sister Robin encourages him to move on from his past and pursue Sydney. Jonathan spends the day in the newspaper archives and finally discovers the truth: Sydney’s father, a hockey player, stepped in to be her mother’s skating partner for a competition at the park gazebo after her original partner bailed. Jonathan finds the original newspaper article documenting their win. In the climax, Sydney prepares to leave for the airport but stops by the gazebo one last time. Jonathan finds her there and presents her with the article—the final piece of her family puzzle. Realizing that Chicago and Jonathan represent the 'home' she never knew she was looking for, Sydney decides to stay, choosing a future with Jonathan and Leah over the job in Rome.
