    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A haunted airline safety video introduces the Christmas spirits
    • The entire Christmas Carol journey happens on a trans-Pacific flight
    • The flight is theatrically run by a Santa-emcee and festive cabin crew
    • The plane is diverted to Utah on Christmas Day after a mechanical issue
    • Ghosts use airline and time-travel jargon as if it is standard in-flight service

Why we’d put this one on

Erin Krakow plays Ella Neezer, a ruthless New York travel executive who hates Christmas and boards a Christmas Eve flight to Sydney hoping to outrun the holiday, only to find her ex-fiance Jake, played by Tyler Hynes, on the same plane. Weirdness 8, and the gimmick is glorious: a haunted airline safety video introduces the Christmas spirits, and the entire Christmas Carol journey unfolds at 30,000 feet, run by a Santa-emcee and festive cabin crew. This 2025 release has no rating yet, but a Dickens redemption story crammed onto a trans-Pacific flight is a swing I am completely here for. Krakow and Hynes together don't hurt either.

    Full story (spoilers)
Ella Neezer is introduced as the icy, hyper-productive CEO of Great Expectations Trips, the kind of boss who rejects holiday cheer, berates her staff, and treats Christmas as an inconvenience. Her team has prepared a yuletide-heavy ad campaign, but Ella tears it apart and insists on changes even as she prepares to leave New York for a Sydney business trip on Christmas Eve. She repeatedly announces that she does not celebrate the holiday, that she is flying over Christmas on purpose, and that she wants to be left alone. At the airport and on the plane, Ella’s carefully controlled world starts to crack. She runs into Jake, her ex-fiancé, for the first time in years, and the reunion reopens wounds about their breakup, which happened around Christmas and centered on Ella’s inability to prioritize anything besides work. She also learns that her assistant Bobbi has been hiding a family emergency involving her son Tim, who has asthma and needs expensive care. The flight itself is absurdly festive, with a Santa-emcee, Christmas crackers, carols, and an airline crew determined to create a “Christmas above the clouds.” Then the supernatural element takes over. Marlene Jacobson, Ella’s deceased former mentor, appears inside the flight safety video as a ghost and tells Ella she is being visited by three spirits. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes her through memories of childhood loneliness at boarding school, graduate school and her first encounter with Jake in a library, and the time she was mentored by Marlene into becoming a hard-edged success machine. Those memories reveal that Ella once had warmth, ambition, and hopes for a big life, but slowly learned to equate worth with constant work and emotional distance. The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Ella the damage she causes in the present. Her employees resent her fearsome leadership and feel unappreciated, Bobbi is drowning in child care and medical expenses, and Jake has devoted himself to a charity helping at-risk children while still quietly carrying a torch for Ella. Ella also sees how deeply her sister Francis misses her and how badly she has isolated herself from family and community. The holiday she thought she was skipping is happening all around her, and everyone she knows is paying the price for her absence. The final spirit, Christmas Yet To Come, shows Ella a bleak future if she stays the same. In the future vision, Tim’s chair is empty at Christmas, Jake is alone and emotionally resigned, and Ella’s workplace and personal legacy look hollow and forgotten. Terrified, Ella begs for another chance and promises she will change. When she wakes, the flight has been diverted to Utah because of a technical issue, meaning she has not missed Christmas after all. On the ground, Ella finally acts on what she has learned. She apologizes to Bobbi, promises better pay and health insurance that can cover Tim’s medicine, and sends Bobbi home to be with her son. She also tells Jake that she does not want to go through life without him and admits that her obsession with self-sufficiency has left her alone. The flight passengers and crew arrive at a festive hotel, and Ella heads straight to Francis’s home, where she reunites with her sister, Jake, Bobbi, and Tim. The story ends with the family together for Christmas, Ella transformed by the spirits and ready to value love, generosity, and connection over work.
