    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A hidden medieval saffron village in Basque Country that is not even on the map
    • A family marriage custom that exists to preserve ownership of the crocus fields and the saffron legacy
    • The entire village treating saffron like priceless 'red gold' and centering life around one spice

    How it all plays out

Already seen it, or just can’t wait? Open this up for the whole story, ending included.

    Full story (spoilers)
Anna Kelly is trying to make the next step in her writing career, while her best friend Erica Olsen and Erica's fiancé Nico encourage her to keep pushing for something bigger. In Barcelona, Anna hears about the Estrella family’s saffron, dismisses the secrecy around it, and gets into a sharp exchange with Javier Estrella at the shop where he represents the family brand. Javier is immediately defensive about his family’s privacy, but Anna’s curiosity only grows. When Anna’s electric car dies, she ends up in Javier’s hidden village in Basque Country and discovers that the Estrellas are far more serious about tradition than she expected. Javier explains that his family expects him to marry before the next harvest so the family’s crocus fields and legacy can continue, and that he was supposed to meet a matchmaker in Bilbao. To buy time and keep his mother and relatives from worrying, he asks Anna to pretend to be engaged to him, while she gets the access she needs to research the family and possibly land the big story her editor wants. As Anna stays at the Estrella estate, she learns how saffron is grown, harvested, and treated like the village’s “red gold.” She spends time with Javier’s father Carlos, aunt Rosa, cousin Miguel, and the rest of the family, and begins to understand how much labor, pride, and history are tied to the farm. The more she sees, the harder it becomes for her to think of the family as just a story, especially as her fake engagement with Javier starts to feel emotionally real. The chemistry between Anna and Javier grows through shared meals, late-night talks, and small acts of trust. They talk about family expectations, loneliness, and ambition, and both realize they have been living under different kinds of pressure: Javier from the burden of inheriting the farm, and Anna from the fear that she will never write anything as good again. Erica, meanwhile, pushes Anna to think about the career opportunity in front of her, but Anna finds herself valuing the people in the village more than the byline. Eventually, the secrecy catches up with them when Anna’s notes and Erica’s arrival make it clear that both women have been writing about the Estrellas in some form. The family feels betrayed, Anna feels guilty for using their lives as material, and Javier is forced to admit that he never wanted to keep living someone else’s plan. After an emotional confrontation, Anna apologizes, Javier stands up for his own future, and the family realizes that protecting tradition does not have to mean refusing change. The Estrellas accept that a little exposure may help rather than hurt them, Anna’s article is approved, and she and Javier choose each other for real as the village celebrates with toasts, wedding talk, and a renewed sense of hope.
