    Full story (spoilers)
Kim Gallagher is a part-time news writer at WGZA in Chicago who is desperate to prove she can handle on-camera reporting again after a humiliating on-air mistake. When a colleague has to drop out of the station’s Carbondale eclipse assignment, Kim volunteers, and her boss gives her one last chance to show she belongs in front of the camera. She brings along Reed Harris, an overeager but inexperienced producer, and Claire Reynolds, a competent camera operator, while also juggling the realities of being a single mother to her daughter Anna and leaning on her mother’s astrology-filled encouragement. Before Kim leaves for Carbondale, she reflects on the last eclipse seven years earlier, when she briefly connected with a smart, awkward astronomy enthusiast at the event. That stranger turns out to be Malcolm Brooks, now an astronomy professor in Arizona who is traveling to the eclipse to reconnect with his former mentor, Dr. Stanley Longford, and to get help publishing his book. The film makes clear that Kim and Malcolm have both spent years feeling stuck after missed chances, and each sees the eclipse as a symbolic opportunity for a new beginning. On the road and at the hotel, everything goes sideways in a very Hallmark-comic way. Reed struggles with basic production duties, the van dies, rooms are mismanaged, and Kim keeps trying to salvage the story while Claire remains the calm center of the team. At the same time, Malcolm and Kim keep crossing paths, and their old chemistry quickly resurfaces as they discuss astronomy, astrology, and the strange feeling that the universe may have arranged their meeting. Their conversations reveal that Kim is still hurt by her failed engagement and that Malcolm has quietly wondered what happened to the woman he met at the eclipse years earlier. The assignment escalates when the network upgrades the segment to a live national broadcast. Kim is thrilled but terrified, especially because rival reporter Steve Hartwin keeps trying to undermine her, and because Dr. Longford becomes elusive, then disappears entirely right before airtime. Reed finally begins to grow into his producer role, Kim gains confidence, and Malcolm’s friendship with the group deepens as he helps search for a solution and encourages Kim when she starts doubting herself. At the last possible moment, Kim and Reed realize they can save the segment by using Malcolm as the astronomy expert instead of Dr. Longford. Kim goes live on national television and delivers a confident, relatable report while Malcolm explains the eclipse with warmth and charm, turning the chaos into a success. As totality arrives, Kim and Malcolm finally admit how much they have been thinking about each other since the last eclipse, and after the broadcast they choose not to let another seven years pass before seeing each other again.
