Kayli Simone arrives at the Park Lux Chicago to manage the wardrobe for celebrity client Rini Jean during Cosmo Gala week. She meets Liam Mills, the hotel's vigilant security chief, after a chaotic luggage-cart encounter involving a paparazzi drone. Kayli's boss, Celine Lang, unexpectedly has to fly to Paris for her son's elopement, leaving Kayli to make the creative and logistical decisions alone. Although Kayli is talented at alterations, vintage clothing, and styling support, she is deeply afraid of making final decisions because of an old professional mistake. Rini Jean's most important look is a priceless Elizabeth Taylor gown borrowed from the Chicago Fashion Institute. The dress was worn by Taylor to the 1970 Academy Awards and comes with strict chain-of-custody requirements. Kayli redesigns Rini's other looks with vintage and sustainable pieces, but after she leaves the fitting room to shop, the Elizabeth Taylor gown vanishes. Security footage shows no one entering or leaving except Kayli, making her a prime suspect. The disappearance also threatens Liam's chance at becoming international security director and puts Celine Lang's business reputation at risk. Liam and Kayli retrace her visits to vintage stores and learn that other items connected to the gala have also been stolen, including a Hermes purse and a rare watch. As they investigate, they share their personal histories: Liam reveals his past in Delta Force and the injury that ended his military career, while Kayli explains how her grandmother inspired her love of repurposing clothing. Liam helps Kayli confront her fear of responsibility, and Kayli encourages him to admit that he misses having a larger mission. They decide to use invitations belonging to absent guests, the pickle magnates Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle, and go undercover at the gala's private events. Their fake-married-couple act brings them closer as they navigate fashion parties, a bandana theft, and increasingly absurd social situations. Kayli is recruited by Rini Jean's fiancé, international singer Oliver Kenwood, to style Rini for his planned proposal at the Cosmo Gala. Kayli also apologizes to actress Vivien Thorpe for a past styling disaster that made Vivien appear to disappear against a blue-screen backdrop, only to learn that the mistake ultimately led Vivien to a better role and her husband. With her confidence growing, Kayli dances with Liam and they share their first kiss. At the Cosmo Gala, Oliver proposes to Rini Jean, but his engagement ring disappears immediately afterward. Liam and Kayli pursue Vivien's bodyguard, who admits to stealing the ring and is caught after Kayli takes a risky action to stop him. The police recover the ring and the other stolen items, but the Elizabeth Taylor gown remains missing. Errol tells Kayli that Liam has resigned to protect the hotel, while Kayli is offered a position styling Rini Jean for an eighteen-month world tour. When Kayli finds Liam, he reveals that Errol fired him. The contradiction exposes Errol's lie and leads them back to the hotel, where the gown is found in his office. Errol admits that he stole it because he resented Liam's impending promotion and wanted to retire in style, believing insurance would make the crime victimless. He is arrested, the gown is returned intact, and Kayli accepts her new role as a lead stylist. Liam becomes head of security for Rini and Oliver's world tour, allowing the couple to travel together and build a life that balances their careers with their relationship.
