    Full story (spoilers)
Nell Duke is a Chicago professional who loves Christmas, but this year her carefully curated holiday plans start falling apart. Her family’s visit gets canceled, her friends are suddenly unavailable, and she realizes she may be facing Christmas alone. At the same time, she overhears a conversation about how Christmas seems designed for couples, which makes her wonder whether her single status is something to be fixed or simply accepted. After a series of chance encounters with her neighbor Cooper, Nell begins to open up. Cooper helps her with a Christmas tree, offers small acts of kindness, and shares his own perspective on solitude. He works in finance and initially comes across as buttoned-up, but he gradually reveals that he has spent much of his life eating alone and hiding parts of himself. Their banter becomes a connection, and they start leaning on each other for holiday company, advice, and emotional honesty. Nell decides to embrace being single on the 25th and throws herself into a “best of company” Christmas plan: decorating, making gingerbread, taking a carriage ride, getting a solo Christmas card photo shoot, and even going to fancy dinner alone. Cooper, meanwhile, is pulled into planning his office holiday party after his boss assigns him the task. Nell helps him shape the party into something warmer and more personal, while he helps her navigate social situations and family pressure. Their closeness grows through shared traditions and mutual vulnerability. They watch Rudolph together, attend a college mixer survival bootcamp, and talk candidly about the loneliness that can come with being single. Nell begins to realize that her insistence on independence may be hiding a deeper fear of wanting love and not getting it. Cooper, too, confronts the fact that he has been acting out of self-protection and trying to fit in instead of being fully himself. The relationship hits a wall when a colleague implies that Cooper is only spending time with Nell out of pity. Nell is hurt and accuses him of treating her as a charitable project rather than an equal. The misunderstanding exposes both of their insecurities, and Nell joins a singles support group where she finally admits she is not okay with settling for loneliness as an identity. She recognizes that she does want love, but from a place of wholeness rather than need. In the end, Cooper seeks her out at AB Knightsford, the fancy restaurant Nell once planned to visit alone. He confesses that being with her makes him feel like the best version of himself, and Nell admits she does not want to be alone anymore. They choose each other honestly and openly, with Nell’s final fortune coming true: the love she seeks has been closer than she thought.
