    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A Christmas and Hanukkah story built around one shared church/synagogue space
    • A holiday mash-up song that blends 'Joy to the World' with Hanukkah lyrics
    • Repeated jokes about a 'Hanukkah bush'
    • Interfaith choirs, bake sales, and a bowling bet all becoming part of the romance

    Full story (spoilers)
Nikki Roberts and Jake Cohen are introduced as childhood friends turned rivals, each determined to outdo the other in holiday choir and community events. Their families know the score well: Nikki’s father is Reverend Paul Roberts, Jake’s father is Rabbi Cohen, and both mothers have no trouble stirring up competition between them. Nikki directs the children’s choir at St. Joseph Episcopal Church, while Jake has come home from New York, where he plays music and works in the industry, and the two immediately fall back into their old pattern of teasing, one-upmanship, and half-joking resentment. The rivalry takes on new urgency when Temple Beth Am’s furnace breaks, forcing Hanukkah services to be held in the Episcopal church. Nikki is already juggling Christmas concert preparation, and Jake arrives to help his congregation through the crisis, which puts them in each other’s orbit constantly. Their first attempts to work together are a disaster: the kids’ choir and the temple choir become loud and chaotic, each side blames the other for distraction, and even the adults notice that Nikki and Jake are still acting like they’re in high school. As the holidays approach, Nikki’s grandmother Elaine pushes her to take over more leadership, and Jake is challenged to slow down and be present instead of treating every moment like a race. The two begin to collaborate more seriously after a truce, agreeing to combine holiday efforts, decorate the shared space, and even blend the annual fundraiser with the repairs needed for the synagogue. Their teamwork is clumsy at first, but it becomes productive when they bake holiday cookies together and accidentally create a mash-up treat that inspires the idea for a mash-up song. The romance deepens when Nikki asks Jake to write the final concert song, leading them to try and create something that bridges Christmas and Hanukkah. They share a quiet night at a piano bar, where Nikki encourages Jake to believe that his music career and his family life do not have to cancel each other out. They also share a near-confession of how much they each still care about family, community, and the dream of being seen, even as Jake gets a call about a major label meeting that conflicts with the concert. The pressure peaks when Jake leaves for New York to take the meeting, forcing Nikki to decide whether the concert can still happen without him. Rather than cancel, she leans into the lesson that perfection is not the point and that the community can still create something meaningful together. The children, parents, and congregants rally, donations cover Temple Beth Am’s repairs, and the combined choir performs the completed song, “Oy to the World,” blending holiday music, faith, and friendship into one joyful number. In the resolution, Jake returns with surprising news: the label offers him a deal and a tour, but he negotiates the arrangement so he can stay close to Pine Bend and keep being part of the life he has rediscovered. Nikki is overjoyed, and the two finally stop pretending their bond is just competition. They share a real kiss, acknowledge that they are both better together, and end the movie with a playful, affectionate partnership that leaves room for both music and love.
