Much About Love

Bea Bishop returns to the Summer Shakespeare Festival, the theatrical institution founded and run by her mother, Toni Bishop. Bea is directing The Taming of the Shrew with television star Hannah Michaels as Kate, but the production's male lead is suddenly revealed to be Benny Gersten, Bea's former lover and longtime artistic rival. Benny and Bea reunite with their familiar pattern of witty arguments, while the rest of the company immediately notices the unresolved chemistry between them. Benny steps away from the role of Petruchio because he does not want to be directed by Bea, and Clay takes over opposite Hannah while Benny plays Hortensio. Toni then announces that she is retiring after the festival season, and Bea declares that she wants to take over. The plan becomes urgent when Juan, the festival board president, reveals that an anonymous media company has made a buyout offer. The board will only approve Bea as the new festival head if she proves that she can guide The Taming of the Shrew to critical and financial success. Bea feels overwhelmed by the pressure, especially because she once abandoned acting after a harsh review and has spent years worrying that she cannot live up to Toni's legacy. Rehearsals become a clash between Bea's desire to modernize Shakespeare and Benny's commitment to classical tradition. Bea first proposes a stock-trading-floor setting, but she and Benny eventually reach a creative compromise: they reinterpret Kate and Petruchio as partners who secretly scheme together for the dowry, while preserving Shakespeare's language through shared lines and subtle changes. Hannah and Clay grow romantically involved while rehearsing their love story, and Bea warns Hannah and Clay that showmances can distract actors and end painfully. Bea and Benny also encourage the couple to stay focused, but their own attraction becomes increasingly obvious to the company. The cast decides to meddle in Bea and Benny's relationship, inventing rumors that each is secretly obsessed with the other and has written love letters or poems. Bea and Benny believe the false information, briefly become more open with one another, and nearly kiss, only to discover that Hannah, Clay, Don, and the others have manipulated them. At the same time, Bea and Benny's earlier interference in Hannah and Clay's romance backfires, leaving Hannah convinced that she is not talented enough to carry the production. She quits the play and plans to leave for an airport hotel before taking a role in an Italian limited series. With opening night hours away, Bea prepares to replace Hannah as Kate, confronting the same performance anxiety that caused her to quit acting years earlier. Benny helps Bea and attempts to keep the production alive, but Bea becomes hurt when she hears that he once thought Toni's shoes were impossible to fill. Just before the performance, Benny finds Hannah at the airport and convinces her to return, telling her that she only needs to remember that Bea believes in her. Hannah comes back in time to perform, while the company stalls the opening and scrambles to get her into costume. Hannah and Clay deliver a triumphant performance, and Bea's modern yet respectful interpretation wins over the audience and the festival board. Juan announces that the board agrees the festival is safe in Bea's hands. Toni reassures Bea that her success comes from who she is rather than from copying her mother, and encourages her to take care of her heart. Benny finally admits that he has never stopped loving Bea and explains that he avoided playing Petruchio because he could not hide his feelings while working so closely with her. Bea chooses to stay and lead the festival, and she and Benny decide to build a life and artistic partnership together.
