Caroline Wilson is a perfectionist chef running 'Laboratoire' in New York City, obsessed with earning a Mondial star. Her life is upended when she inherits 'The Seagull Cafe' in Lemon Myrtle Cove, Australia, from her Aunt Doreen. Despite her mother's encouragement to find inspiration there, Caroline intends to sell the property immediately to return for a crucial restaurant inspection. Upon arrival, she meets Simon, her handsome landlord and the cafe's cook, and his dog, Spatch (short for Spatula). After an anonymous and critical tasting of the cafe's 'salty snags' and 'over-baked pies,' Caroline reveals her identity and her plan to sell, which upsets the local staff, including the protective Marla and the aspiring baker Beth. Because local contractors are unavailable, Caroline makes a deal with Simon: he will perform the necessary renovations (roofing, wiring, and plumbing) if she helps him in the kitchen. Their relationship is initially prickly as Caroline tries to 'elevate' the menu with technical dishes like macarons, while Simon advocates for simplicity and local flavors like Lemon Myrtle and Lilly Pilly berries. They bond during a 'pipi-ing' trip (gathering clams with their feet) and a late-night baking session where Simon helps Caroline adjust to the local oven. Meanwhile, a developer proposes turning the cafe into a racing-car-themed restaurant, a prospect that horrifies the locals. Conflict peaks when Caroline's ex-fiancé, Nathaniel, arrives via private jet to win her back, just as Marla and the staff attempt to sabotage the sale by shorting the cafe's electrical circuit. In a classic trope, Marla locks Caroline and Simon in the pantry together to force a reconciliation. During the lock-in, they confront their feelings and the reality of the sale. Ultimately, Caroline realizes she cannot destroy her aunt's legacy. She decides to keep the cafe, appointing the local staff to run it while she returns to NYC. After successfully passing her Mondial inspection in New York, Caroline is surprised by Simon, who flies to Manhattan to declare his love. The film ends with the couple reuniting in her professional kitchen, acknowledging that while their lives are worlds apart, they want to make it work.
