Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door

Theresa Connolly returns to her island home and immediately encounters the long-standing rivalry between her mother, Bridget, and the neighbor, Betsy Lucas. The feud is centered on who throws the better annual Halloween barbecue. While delivering 'bewitching' invitations to beat Betsy to the punch, Theresa runs into Mark Lucas, the boy next door she once had a crush on. Mark, now a pilot, and Theresa, a teacher, decide to ignore their parents' animosity and begin dating in secret. Their early dates are unconventional, including a picnic and movie screening in a graveyard and a flight to Palm Springs where Mark lets Theresa take the controls of the plane. As their relationship deepens over seven months, Mark takes Theresa to a plot of land he purchased, sharing his dream of building a home there. After a series of missed connections involving a dead cell phone battery, Mark proposes, and Theresa happily accepts. The couple decides to announce their engagement at a joint dinner, which initially results in a tense 'ambush' atmosphere. However, the mothers, Bridget and Betsy, quickly pivot from enemies to competitive wedding planners. They begin micromanaging every detail, from the 'lavender and tuberose' floral arrangements to the silk napkins and the venue, ignoring Theresa and Mark's desire for a simple ceremony on their own land. The pressure mounts as the mothers fight over caterers and dress styles, leading to a disastrous tasting session involving 'pungent goat cheese' and caviar. Feeling the weight of the parental interference, Mark suggests postponing the wedding, which Theresa interprets as a lack of commitment, leading to a painful breakup. The parents eventually realize their meddling caused the rift. The fathers, James and Frank, bond over golf while the mothers finally call a truce. In a final effort to fix their mistake, Bridget and Betsy trick Theresa and Mark into meeting at an ice cream stand under the guise of 'mother-daughter/son time.' The couple reconciles, realizing they belong together, and the film concludes with a simple, beautiful wedding ceremony held on their own land, officiated by the local priest with both families finally at peace.
