    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Tess Harper, the Sentinel's crossword editor, preparing for a publicized match against 'BB' (BigBrain X), a supercomputer developed by XCAL Communications. During a tour of the facility, Tess meets CEO Morgan Daniels and notices a suspicious man posing as a plant technician who fails to identify a common fiddle-leaf fig. Shortly after Tess leaves, Morgan enters a 'smart' elevator, which malfunctions and plunges to the ground, killing him. Detective Logan O'Connor and his new partner Amrita arrive to investigate, quickly determining that the elevator's safety protocols were manually overridden. Tess provides a tip about the fake plant technician, leading Logan to Eric Ogden, a member of the Howlin' Wolves Motorcycle Club. Eric admits he was hired by rival CEO Keith Eisner for corporate espionage but denies the murder. As the investigation deepens, suspicion shifts to Jesse Alexander, XCAL's lead coder, who was vocally opposed to Morgan's plan to sell a data-collection program to the government. It is revealed that Jesse is actually Stephanie Rice, Morgan's secret daughter from a past relationship with his former partner, Guinevere. Meanwhile, a temp worker named Layla Barnes, who pickpocketed a valuable hard-drive from Morgan before he died, is found murdered. The hard-drive, containing the only copy of the government-bid software, goes missing. In a parallel subplot, Logan's father, Chauncey, contemplates retirement after a colleague's sudden death, while Tess's Aunt Candace takes up Italian cooking classes to 'shake things up.' The mystery reaches a climax when Logan discovers that XCAL Vice President Paul Redford had memorized Morgan's password. Paul killed Morgan to prevent him from pulling the government bid and killed Layla to reclaim the hard-drive for sale on the black market. In a final confrontation at the XCAL offices, Tess uses her voice-recognition access to BB to trigger an alarm, distracting Paul long enough for Logan to disarm him. The film concludes with an 'unretirement' party for Chauncey, who realizes he isn't ready to leave the force, and a tender moment between Tess and Logan where they discuss opening up emotionally.
