Caught by Love

Annie Collins travels to The Monarch Malta for a weeklong wellness retreat after taking her friend Joanna Mitchum’s place, hoping to escape her routine and figure out what she really wants from her life. She arrives in a flurry of resort rituals, detox drinks, sound baths, and meditation exercises, and immediately meets Jake Daltry, who seems like another guest but is actually a private investigator working undercover. The resort’s atmosphere is all curated serenity, but Annie is still carrying the weight of her stalled career, her family responsibilities, and the sense that she has settled for a life that no longer fits. Jake is investigating an anonymous tip about the stolen Crestvell Diamond necklace from the Met and believes one of the guests may be the buyer. He and his partner Lara quietly track the guests through excursions and social interactions, trying to identify who is connected to the deal. Annie, meanwhile, is drawn into Jake’s orbit and begins helping him with harmless cover stories and guest observations while also trying to enjoy the retreat for herself. Their banter turns flirtatious as they bike through excursions, survive awkward wellness sessions, and learn little truths about each other, including the fact that Annie borrowed Joanna’s identity and Jake hides behind a polished, playful exterior. As they spend more time together, the investigation and the romance start to overlap. Annie confides that she used to want to be a lawyer, but family pressures and practical concerns pushed her into banking, while Jake reveals he left the police force after solving an off-the-books case because helping people directly gave his work meaning. Their chemistry deepens during a late-night swim and a series of honest conversations, and Jake tells Annie that he likes her just the way she is. Annie begins to hope that this trip might lead to something real, even though both of them know the week is temporary. The case gets more complicated when the clues initially point toward a number of guests, including Peter Marks and George Evers, but one red herring after another falls away. Annie nearly blows her cover while trying to help, and their trust is strained when Jake’s work makes it clear that he cannot let his feelings distract him. The biggest break comes when Annie notices that Robert Carlisle, the resort owner, is moving strangely and has just left a party to meet Margot, whose class is being covered because she is away on maternity leave. This leads Annie and Jake to the marina, where the necklace exchange is about to happen. At the marina, the truth comes out: Robert is in on the deal, but he claims he was misled by X, who turns out to be his ex-girlfriend. Federal agents and police step in, and the chase erupts as the stolen necklace investigation finally breaks open. Afterward, Annie and Jake reconcile, and he admits that he found more than he was looking for. Annie decides to seriously consider applying to law school, and Jake offers support, including the possibility that the reward money could help with tuition. The film ends with the two of them emotionally aligned, having turned an undercover case into a real love story.
