Full story (spoilers)
Ronni Rice hosts a weekly mahjong game with her closest friends while helping her daughter Savannah prepare to leave for college. The transition makes Ronni confront how quickly her life is changing, especially because her ex-husband Mike reminds her that their agreement requires them to sell the family home once Savannah leaves. Ronni loves the house and struggles with the thought of losing the place where she raised her daughter. When the poker instructor for a school fundraiser has a family emergency, Ronni agrees to teach mahjong despite having never taught it formally. She meets Ben North at the school while both are helping children and preparing for the fundraiser, and their awkward banter quickly develops into mutual interest. Ben is a general contractor, and he offers to repair Ronni's house for free if she will organize a welcoming mahjong group for his lonely mother, Birdie, at the Blue Sky West retirement community. Ronni's first class at Blue Sky West is a success, leading to more requests for lessons. At the same time, her school position is reduced to part-time, and a hospital rejects her because her emergency-room experience is outdated. Ben encourages her to consider making mahjong more than a hobby, while Ronni gradually begins to imagine a new career. She faces setbacks, including a chaotic and poorly organized lesson for a book club, but she learns from the experience and continues building her confidence. With help from Savannah and her friends, Ronni develops a business identity called The Marvelous Mrs. Mahj. Her classes expand to Windward Country Club, private groups, and even teenagers who become interested after she compares mahjong to video games. Her growing reputation brings a possible teaching opportunity at Oakview Community College. Meanwhile, Ronni and Ben grow closer through house repairs, shared meals, a karaoke night, a Chinese Cultural Center event, and a picnic featuring Ronni's casserole. Both have been shaped by divorce and family obligations, but they begin learning to ask for help instead of handling everything alone. The pressure increases when Mike gives Ronni only a month to buy his share before listing the house. Ronni meets with the bank, but the loan officer says her mahjong income is too new and that she needs a year of records or a long-term contract. Feeling defeated, Ronni begins packing and pushes Ben away, insisting that the house and its future are her problem. Ben gives her space, but eventually they reconcile when Ronni admits that she wants him to work with her rather than try to fix everything for her. Ronni's Oakview trial class receives exceptional feedback, and the college offers her a permanent part-time adult-education contract with ongoing mahjong courses. The contract provides enough stable income for the bank to approve her loan, allowing Ronni to buy Mike's share and keep the home. At her final planned mahjong gathering, she announces that the house will remain hers, Savannah returns to celebrate, and Ben gives Ronni the growth chart he saved from the wall. Ronni preserves both her home and her new business while finding love with Ben and embracing an unwritten new chapter.
