Full story (spoilers)
Marley Hansen is a successful but exhausted architect whose demanding job has repeatedly disrupted plans with her teenage daughter, Lily. Marley and Lily's father, Dan, try to co-parent, but Marley has missed trips, driving training, and other promised time with Lily because of work. Marley takes Lily to Cannon Cove, Oregon, for a summer vacation centered on the town's annual Sandcastle Festival, though she remains tethered to her employer through constant calls and new commercial design assignments. At their rented cottage, Marley meets Adam Sullivan after a plumbing problem leads her to mistake him for the plumber. Adam owns the neighboring house, a renovation project he once shared with his former fiancée Amelia, and he helps Marley repair the cottage. Adam's relaxed, present-focused attitude clashes with Marley's phone-dependent work life, but the friction quickly becomes playful attraction. Lily befriends Adam's niece Paige, and Marley signs herself and Lily up for the sandcastle competition after learning about its prize money and the possibility of funding their long-promised trip to Paris. Adam agrees to coach Marley and Lily, drawing on the sandcastle-building tradition he shared with his late father. Their team, eventually named Last One Sanding, designs an Eiffel Tower sculpture that includes figures representing Marley and Lily and their dream of visiting Paris. As Adam teaches them how to work with sand, he and Marley trade advice about letting go, changing direction, and stepping outside their comfort zones. Their growing connection helps Lily open up, while Marley begins recognizing that her career has become an avoidance mechanism rather than a fulfilling life. Adam also starts moving beyond Amelia by considering an offer on his unfinished house. The team initially misses qualifying for the finals by one point after part of its Eiffel Tower collapses, but a rival team's use of prohibited materials leads to its disqualification and sends Last One Sanding back into the competition. Marley and Adam dance at the town festival, acknowledge their feelings, and spend a romantic evening together, though both worry that the relationship will end when Marley returns to Seattle. Marley finally tells Joan that she is leaving her commercial architecture job to return to residential design. In the finals, the team's pyramid sculpture collapses. While Marley regroups, Dan offers to buy half of her existing stake in his company so she can afford to open her own firm. Lily urges Marley to return to the team, and Adam proposes carving a smaller pyramid out of the damaged structure. They finish in time and receive an honorable mention for heart and perseverance, while the local high-school team wins first prize. Adam initially declines the family's celebration dinner because he expects an inevitable goodbye. He then speaks to Dan, who offers Seattle contacts and contractor referrals. With the sale of his house giving him freedom to move, Adam meets Marley on the deck and tells her he wants their future to be together. Marley agrees.
